πŸŒ™βœ¨ EPISODE 11 IS OUT NOW βœ¨πŸŒ™

Episode 11 of Fall of Civilizations is finally here! Thank you to everyone who has stuck with the show through the crisis - I really hope it's been worth the wait.

Available now on SoundCloud - and it should be with your favoured podcast outlet soon.

---------------

On the outskirts of modern Istanbul, a line of ancient walls lies crumbling into the earth...
In this episode, we look at one of history’s most incredible stories of survival - the thousand-year epic of the Byzantine Empire. Find out how this civilization suffered the loss of its Western half, and continued the unbroken legacy of Rome right through the middle ages. Hear about how it formed a bridge between two continents, and two ages, and learn how the impregnable walls of Constantinople were finally brought crashing to the ground.

This episode, we're joined by the choir from the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in London, and a number of musicians playing traditional Byzantine instruments such as the Byzantine lyra, the Qanun and the Greek Santur.

Hi Syed, there is no video for Episode 11 yet. I'm currently working on the video for Episode 9, and the rest will follow soon after.

Great to get such a good review of the history of Byzantium. I've been looking for years for a good book or documentary on this subject, but so far, all were either too superficial or too academic. This was just the perfect level of detail for me and I was able to listen to it in two sessions while out walking in my local park at dusk and during moonrise - added nicely to the atmosphere!

learning about history could be so easy. and your series also meets my own melancholic temper. many many thanks for this your great work!

Fantastic episode. So great to hear your voice again Paul. Sometimes I feel like an alien learning about new planet when I listen. Every episode shows me how incomplete my understanding of our fascinating past is. Also the 4 chariot racing teams building a wall to save the city story would make a great Hollywood movie.

Thank you for the kind words, and so glad you enjoyed! It has been a challenge to record during lockdown, so I'm glad it all came off alright.

Wow, finally consumed this within last 3 days. This is epic, I knew so much about Roman (Western) Republic and Empire but always was missing chronological knowledge about Byzantium. Thanks a lot, the quality of script and recording are amazing! :)

Another great episode. Your timing is particularly good, coming as it does the same week that the Turkish government has decided to once again convert the Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
