12. The Inca - Cities in the Cloud (Part 1 of 2)

I'm very excited to announce the early release of Episode 12 as a video. This has been an incredible episode to work on, since the landscapes and environments of the Andes, as well as the monumental ruins of the Inca, really have to be seen to be believed. We're joined on this episode by state-of-the-art drone photographers, and the guys at ADV Estudio, who have mocked up some incredible archaeologically accurate depictions of both Machu Picchu and Inca Cusco at their height of their power in the middle ages, and even some cinematic reenactment footage licensed from the BBC.

This episode will be coming to YouTube in the next weeks, but will be exclusively for the show's supporters throughout that time.
I really hope you enjoy the episode, and once again thank you for supporting our work.

I only just got around to watching this now, and as always, well done, Paul. This was spectacular. The visuals and the reenactments were top notch. I do always wonder how you're able to amass so much footage of these locations and reenactments; is it typical for so many of these scenes to be filmed in remote locations for use?

Sorry to hear that! It seems to be working fine for me, but there may be some server trouble over at Vimeo... it is also available on YouTube if the problem persists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRB9dJmZhVk

Amazing. I always wait for the new episodes. This series is a blessing and a god send. In the Age of TikTok, it is SO refreshing to see someone carrying the tradition of high-quality, well- researched and produced documentaries. Thank you Paul!

Is Part 2 in production?

Steve Brudney

Thanks Paul for this documentary on the Inca Civilization with it's amazing diversity of geography's and climates it was able to unite(although for a short period of time by historical standards. Also amazing the economic complexity it attained without the concept of money. Thanks again.

Thank you Thomas, this is a really beautiful way of putting it. I'm so glad you enjoyed.

How do I get captions?

There’s a line you give in this latest podcast which hit me like lightening. I am paraphrasing, but you said something to the effect that “this land was the final destination of mankind since leaving Ethiopia”. For some reason that line had a profound effect on me. In an instant I no longer viewed the conquest as the new world versus the old world, but rather humans versus other humans. I visualized humans traversing throughout the world as a single family. So often I find myself viewing different cultures as though they are different from me, which of course is absurd. But that line you gave really opened my eyes to view humanity as a single entity irrespective of our past histories or cultures we were born into. I may not be explaining it that well. But just want to say that your historical podcasts go far and beyond simple facts and dates. You really have an amazing ability to bring history, and those that lived this history, to life. In a way that I have found extremely rare. Looking forward to your future podcasts.

Paul, thank you for giving yourself to this important work and bringing it to us. I was an archeologist for most of my 20s in the late 70s and 80s working on prehistoric sites in the eastern United States. My career took a turn and 35 years later, now retired, I'm trying to catch up on the current research. Your documentaries are absolutely wonderful, the very best. Thanks again Paul.

Beautiful, disturbing, enlightening, and worth rewatching over and over again! Just astonishing landscapes! I'm familiar with bits and pieces of this long story but not all of it and not in this style or perspective. Thank you for another gorgeous and thought-provoking production!

Elizabeth Orman

Probably my favorite of all the episodes, if I were forced to choose among such quality. Thank you very much for doing this.
