VBSS Kit Review

Over our deployment we operated as a VBSS and security element. VBSS (Visit, Board , Search and Seizure) is utilized in maritime environments. VBSS tactics mimic those of CQT plus and minus a few small details.

When clearing and moving through ships and other water based vessels, the room for manuevering is very slim. Hatches (doorways) and hallways are much smaller and tighter than a regular hallway and door that you would encounter in a building or house.

Your kit and gear is always going to change depending on your operational environment, situation and friendly/ enemy capabilities. As stated previously, operating on a ship or water vessel does not give you much physical room to work with. So a slim kit and load out is required to fit that environment.

During our VBSS runs we would typically only run 4 mags due to the close proximity in which engagements could take place. We were also lucky enough to be equipped with EOTECH Holographic sights for our weapons. This allowed us to sight in on targets much quicker and have a better essay on what we were looking at when sighted in. Some of our dudes were also equipped with M9s and M18s as a side arm.

Kit wise, I ran chest rig over my plate carriers that included 3 mags attached to my admin pouch where I stored extra batteries, electrical tape, extra eye protection, and a writing pen. I also ran a velcro insert belt that was equipped with a speed reload mag pouch, modified IFAK, and a mini oxygen tank in case of an underwater emergency situation.

Probably one of the coolest kits I’ve rocked. And btw, I’m not a kit nerd or weapons nerd, I just thought some of you might enjoy getting to know some of the more fine details of how we operated in certain situations.

Hell yeah, what we like to hear

Kit in my day was an H-harness with war belt over a flack jacket. My personal gear is light years ahead of what I had back then. Although I did build the same kit I had back then for old times sake

Matthew Shore

That’s all you can do brother, and I believe in you whole heartedly 🫑

Same man. I’m hoping to get a head start. Doing as much as I can right now
