At first, Valery was terribly scared of meeting Gleb because Gleb knew everything about him. Everything that connected them in the juvenile colony, everything about Valery being a snitch, how low his status was, and what he had to do to survive there.

Gleb could be the end of Valery’s comfortable life because if anyone else found out this information, there was a chance the Academik would stop protecting him, stop favoring him, and stop working with him. Surviving in prison alone again would be impossible for Valery - he had made too many enemies over the years in the adult colony, hunting down the Academik ’s traitors and turning them in.

It seemed like everything was over. Until Valery realized that Gleb still seemed to have feelings for him, a mix of love and overwhelming guilt. Gleb was unhappy with the dull, stable routine of his adult life, and Valery became a nostalgic breath of fresh air for him. His first childhood love, the person he had thought about for years, now alive, standing right in front of him.

Valery realized he could use this. The Academik’s business had an unresolved issue - fewer and fewer prison staff were willing to work with him and smuggle drugs inside.

Valery knew he could use Gleb for this. And Gleb didn’t even have to know.
