Early Access Video - Why I Don't Have A Problem With Spider Ball Pythons
Added 2019-09-07 03:20:34 +0000 UTC
In the last few months spider ball pythons have become highly controversial. They are controversial because of wobble. They aren't like other ball pythons. It is interesting that this has become so controversial lately since we have known about wobble since the very beginning. That said, a few months back when we released our first video about spider ball pythons, a lot of people were upset that I said that I don't have a problem with them. In that video I explained a lot about spider and the cool science behind spider, but I didn't explain why spider doesn't bother me. Well, because you were all so rad and encouraged me to explain my reasons (even though the majority of you disagreed with my opinion) we have returned to the subject. Why am I okay with spider ball pythons?

I know this video is pretty old at this point. But I appreciate the likening to autism, as I know a lot of people think that neurodivergence is inherently defective and that parents need to avoid doing certain things so that they won't have a "defective" child. Just because something is different doesn't mean that it is defective or that it should be bred out of existence.

Oh, btw. Your example spider morph companion is absolutely stunning.

Having seen videos of snakes with corkscrewing and intense wobble due to the spider gene, I personally would not want to purposefully breed that possibility into a snake. That said, I have no personal experience with spider ball pythons, and I agree that if the snake is eating well, shedding well, not acting nervous and aggressive or super sedated, and shows interest in the world around them during their normal wakeful hours, then your snake probably isn't suffering. I believe that "truth" changes every day with the daily advances and changing in our understanding of the world around us, and evidence based truth, as you describe, is at least a sound and reasonable approach :-) Thank you for doing this video. While I have not changed my mind about what I would personally be willing to delve into as far as breeding goes if and when I do breed ball pythons... You have changed my opinion about the people willing to do so <3 <3

Hey Clint! So, I just want to be upfront and state that, while I disagree with your ultimate conclusion on this issue, I really appreciate your measured approach to the topic. I definitely believe that the pack mentality and emotional reaction on either side of this issue really degrade what should be a valuable discourse. As someone who has purchased and currently owns a spider, I wouldn't do it again nor will I ever breed them. Primarily because of the lack of research and understanding of reptile psychology. We currently don't have a great way to access if spider ball pythons are experiencing some form of discomfort due to the wobble. However, it is pretty clear that it alters their behavior. As you stated in your video, altered behavior in captive animals isn't necessarily something that will impact their survival as captives. That being said, some traits in captive animals do impact their quality of life even if they survive. Examples being pugs with breathing issues and labs with hip dysplasia. These are easier to write off as being negative impacts because they cause physical rather than mental disability. This topic is just so complicated because we really need more research on reptile psychology to understand it fully. That being said, I personally would rather play it safe and avoid breeding animals with obvious behavior differences until we have a better understanding of this behavioral change has a negative impact on their quality of life. There are so many other beautiful morphs out there! Ultimately though, having a respectful discourse that doesn't rely on gut reactions is very valuable and I appreciate the way to went around your argument.

Hi Clint! Would you mind posting some of the sources you described in this video? I’m interested in looking further into this topic and would love to read through the evidence and data. Thank you!
