Early Access Video - Owl, The Best Pet Reptile?

Comments

Toucans specifically are a pain because they can easily die from too much iron to the point where the trace amounts of iron in normal water is enough to kill them in just a few years. They're also frugivores so their poop is completely liquid and their beaks can cut you pretty bad. They also need a massive amount of space, food constantly(basically the typical stuff birds require...). To be honest I would expect a Toucan to get 0/5 for both hardiness and care because of these reasons. Would definitely be fun to see though.

I'd love to hear your scores on the human primate..

Julie Bjurling

Cool video Clint. Owl's are superinteresting birds. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on birds that are more comon to keep as pets and maybe a video about keeping a Toucan or some other exotic bird.

Aleksander Schultz

Worst score shared with the peregrine falcon. Super cool animals, an utterly terrible pet for most people. Edit: Also, if they can't move their eyes at all, how to they focus both eyes at something at a variable distance?

Illoney

Nice. I am a bit disappointed in something here. Nothing to do with owls. Thanks forvall the entertainment. .its been fun. OUT.

L. Shannon Carter

100% came into this video trying to guess who would blink first, Clint or the owl.

Hi, Clint. I liked the video, but wanted to add a few things. I'm a general class falconer who has been interested in hunting with owls, so I have asked every experienced falconer who has flown owls about them. Not an easy task, as there aren't many, but there were some guidelines I gathered: first, passage (wild caught) owls are pretty much a no go. Aside from the fact that it is almost impossible task to really determine their age, there is just something about their neurology that makes it really really really difficult to train and man them properly. Second, unless you are a very experienced falconer, you are not going to have a lot of luck with owls. Some people call them stubborn, some people call them stupid. Personally, I lean more towards the stubborn. side. As to getting equipment, most falconer will make their own jesses, anklets, giant hoods, sometimes hoods (there are none for owls), and sometimes even leashes. Gloves not so much. Also, owls (like falcons) do best on a block perch. Getting them a bow perch (basically exactly what it sounds like) can cause problems to develop with the feet of the bird; and foot problems are the fastest way to kill any raptor.
