2020-12-11 12:44:51 +0000 UTCHello Clint, Keeping on the topic of reptile intelligence, what do you think of reptiles and socially learned behaviours? Particularly in reptiles that are not that social naturally. A study by Anna Wilkinson et al using Red-Foot tortoises showed some interesting results in this regard. A single Red-Foot tortoise was allowed to observe a conspecific complete a task. A control group of other tortoises was not allowed the same observation opportunity. All these tortoises were then allowed to engage with the same task as the conspecific animal demonstrator. All, save the one that observed the conspecific failed the task, while the animal that observed completed it. Do you think findings like these suggest that social learning in non-social species means sociality is not a prerequisite for social learning. Since this would apply to a lot of reptile species kept in the hobby it seems.
