To Clint's point, I have a milk snake who is terrestrial and has rather glossless scales. His belly scoots, however, are highly iridescent and extremely smooth. Were it not for his rougher scales on the rest of his body, he would be rather difficult to hold on to. I'm not certain, but I would hypothesize that there is a benefit that comes from having scales that are in contact with the ground (soil not sand) being super smooth and, therefore, iridescent. I don't know if its purpose is to aid in locomotion or prevention of buildup on the body or something else entirely.
