She did what she did to escape being raped by an old man and shut away from society for the next five, ten, maybe twenty years. And in fact, I'm kind of mad at Eloise, because Cressida tried to go to her for help, and Eloise basically told her she didn't have time for her problems. I'd even argue that Cressida's problems were bigger. Who's the bigger victim, the girl getting basically sold by her father into a life of rape and misery, or the rich white man who was at risk of unknowingly marrying someone who wrote a mean gossip column? Eloise spends so much time going on about feminism and the rights of women, she should have had a little more compassion for her supposed friend.

2025-04-18 02:32:26 +0000 UTCPenelope is my queen but the feminist angle on Whistledown when until literally her most recent publishing her papers have entirely been her reinforcing the patriarchy by tearing down everyone (especially the other women) in the town, often emphatically people in the family she is now a part of, is like... girl are you trying to crush the patriarchy or capitalize on it. Like to be clear Penelope's messiness is one of my favourite parts of her character but acting like the plot-relevance of Whistledown hasn't been as a means of forwarding Penelope's own interests just doesn't hit the way the writers angle it to when we've seen two seasons proving otherwise.
