While the usual suspects called it “woke,” a significant amount of Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s African American fanbase either didn’t think Bucky Barnes’ apology was enough, or didn’t think it was making the statement it thought it was. That’s because Bucky Barnes’ apology and the events leading up to it reflect a long history of deceit and naivety regarding racial equality that’s hard for African Americans to take at face value.
