Episode 14: The War on Cars Meets Car Talk
Added 2019-03-19 18:12:51 +0000 UTC
For nearly thirty years, brothers Ray and Tom Magliozzi were the hosts of NPR’s “Car Talk” and the voices of American car culture. Famous for their distinctive Boston accents and infectious laughs, Click and Clack didn’t just diagnose engine troubles, they recognized that people’s personal relationships often revolved around their automobiles. In a War on Cars exclusive, Doug sits down with Ray Magliozzi to talk about car culture, the brothers’ surprising war on SUVs, and whether or not “Bike Talk” could even be half the phenomenon “Car Talk” was… and still is.

Your point is well taken. When my ex-husband and I were driving the SUV in question, in the early and mid-90s, we were in fact living on a dirt road near the top of a mountain. He was from Maine and I let him pick the vehicle, since I knew exactly nothing about cars (I didn't even know you needed an inspection sticker, that's how much of a novice I was in the car ownership department). The vehicle served us fairly well, and was a fraction of the size of a modern-day SUV, but I always kind of hated it and felt uncomfortable with the decision. I would never make the same choice again, but it seemed reasonable at the time.

2019-03-22 01:06:05 +0000 UTCI really appreciate episodes that resonate outside New York City, where we face an even steeper uphill battle against car culture. This one was particularly satisfying. But one point I'd like to challenge Sarah on, is when she mentioned offhandedly that she needed a 4-wheel drive car when she lived in rural Maine. One episode of Car Talk from the late 80s that sticks out in my mind is when Click and Clack made fun of the yahoos that would drive their 4-wheel drive cars (too fast) up and down I-93 in a snowstorm just because they could. Needing a gas guzzling SUV or 4-wheel drive car in New England is a myth that should be challenged whenever it is uttered. I'm a skiing Vermonter who got rid of a 4-wheel drive Subaru in 1993 and never looked back. Unless you're a farmer, a logger, or living on the top of a steep mountain (and who should, really?) all you need is a front-wheel drive car and a good pair of snow tires.
