Mikael Colville-Andersen's name is practically synonymous with Copenhagen, bicycling and smart urban design. In 2007, Mikael launched what would become known as the Cycle Chic movement with a series of pictures showing regular people in fashionable clothing riding bicycles in the Danish capital, something that’s rather unremarkable there but that attracted a lot of attention everywhere else. His blog, Copenhagenize, spawned an urban design firm, a widely shared TED talk, a book, and a TV documentary series called The Life-Sized City that took him all over the world sharing regular people’s ideas for how to change their cities. The show's international vibe and Mikael's conversations with ordinary people in off-the-beaten-path locations have led some to call him "the Anthony Bourdain of urbanism."
In this bonus episode just for Patreon supporters of The War on Cars, Doug talks with Mikael about what people get wrong about Copenhagen, the concept of "transferability," and how a city that already had a lot of bike lanes and ample space for pedestrians responded to the pandemic.
As always, thank you for your support!
Enjoy!
- Doug, Aaron and Sarah
