BONUS: Hashtag Ban Cars with Michael Hobbes

Hello, War on Cars supporters!

In this quick ad-free bonus episode just for Patreon supporters, we present a part of our conversation with Michael Hobbes that was left on the cutting room. It's a quickie, but in just 10 minutes or so we cover everything from how newspaper headlines absolve drivers who hit vulnerable road users and why people spend way too much time worrying about hashtags and slogans like #BanCars. It didn't quite fit in the original episode and we thought you'd all get a kick out of it.

If you haven't heard it yet, go back and listen to our full interview with Michael in episode 72.

We'll be back with another episode soon. We're also ramping up production through the end of the year, so be on the lookout for a lot more content as we close out 2021.

Thanks for your support!

- Aaron, Sarah and Doug

Still irks me that even trying to engage my own father in conversation about the necessity of cars for *everything* results in a dismissive comment that "these are fine, whimsical ideas" - an unmistakable "whatever." People of privilege, regardless of their political stripes, cannot even begin to entertain that there is anything wrong with one car per driver for every trip, everywhere. They resist contemplating that this has disproportionately negative social and economic impacts on those without the same privileges. As if car ownership and driving everywhere is a god given right. They accuse me of othering myself, and say "if I so dislike the bike infrastructure, I should sell my bike, buy a car, and quit my whining... " And then often followup with "electric cars blah, blah, blah."

Hehehe... "All cars matter" Gotta remember that nugget next time I want to pick a fight with my otherwise levelheaded, responsible, mostly liberal dinner party guests... Nothing makes a liberal sound more conservative than #BanCars . They'll instantly abandon nuance, and won't accept that it could improve cities anywhere, anytime, however limited... As if it's a slippery slope leading instantly to a return to the horse and buggy, and buildings with wooden pegs, lit only by oil lamps. The *only* thing worse would be trying to take away their iPhone. Well, OK, maybe not even that...
