EPISODE 95: Make Love Not Cars with Dan Savage

Hello War on Cars listeners!

As many of you know, anytime someone notable tweets something even mildly anti-car, we often quote tweet them with the greeting, "Welcome to the War on Cars." Well, after we did that to one particular media figure, he reached out to us via DM, saying quite plainly, "I don't know how to drive. I HATE CARS. I should be a guest!"

Without hesitation, we were happy to welcome Dan Savage to The War on Cars.

I recall reading Dan's advice column Savage Love in print back when I was in college, so getting to talk to him was a big thrill for me. As you'll hear in this episode, we all were very excited to have Dan on the podcast and hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did putting it together.

We also wanted to thank everyone who came out to our live show at Caveat on November 1st. We had a sold-out room and a fantastic time meeting so many listeners. A recording of that episode will be released as a bonus episode for Patreon supporters soon so everyone else can hear how it went. Oh, and we also have another Patreon bonus coming soon with Major League Soccer player and urbanism fan Tesho Akindele. You won't want to miss it.

Thanks as always for your support!

- Doug

Episode 95: Make Love Not Cars with Dan Savage

Dan Savage, the writer and activist behind the long-running advice column Savage Love, does not have a driverโ€™s license. In fact, he pretty much hates cars. Dan tells us what the early days of ACT UP and the fight for marriage equality can teach other social movements. Ever the advice columnist, Dan answers real questions from listeners. If we win the war on cars, where will teenagers go to get it on? Why do drivers frequently scream homophobic slurs at cyclists? And whatโ€™s the relationship between polyamory and having too many bikes?

The War on Cars

This episode (#95) was so incredible I became a patron just to post this comment! I didn't know Dan Savage and I'm now in love with his ideas and experiences. I just need to say I think the hosts misinterpreted the comment by "spouse of a podcast host": they were asking how to unsee the awfulness of car dependency in urban design, not how to put up with a spouse who incessantly points out this problem. And to be honest I have this question myself: I "took the orange pill" (i.e. started watching the Not Just Bikes channel on YouTube) over a year ago and since then can't help but notice and point out the horrors of car dependency-inducing urban design. Have one's eyes opened like this is both a blessing and a curse: I don't think I can be happy living in North America anymore, and I'm a recent immigrant from Latin America in Montreal who can't even think of immigrating yet again to a less car-infested and -dependant country. What oh what do I do??? HELP!
