EPISODE 106: Nick Offerman

Hello, friends of The War on Cars!

You know how sometimes we tweet "Welcome to The War on Cars" at notable people who post or say anything we consider to be within the podcast's wheelhouse? Well, not too long ago we did it to the actor, humorist, author and woodworker Nick Offerman.

A while back, Offerman — who many of you may know as the gruff city parks director Ron Swanson on the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation or from his turn as the survivalist Bill on the HBO series The Last of Us — wrote a column for Outside in which he mused on the abuse he has received from drivers while riding a bicycle in New York City and Los Angeles. It got our attention and prompted the aforementioned tweet. Graciously, Nick accepted our invitation to come on the podcast to talk about his experience as a bike commuter and, as you'll hear, a whole lot more.

We also recommend Nick's book, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside for its observations on nature and sharing public space. Plus, he has a rant about people who purposely make their vehicles "louder than is necessary" that we think you'll all appreciate.

Nick is a very nice human being and a big supporter of getting more people on bikes. We're very grateful to him for taking the time to be on the show and hope you enjoy the episode!

All the best,

Aaron, Sarah, and Doug
