Never worked until one day, someone at university got it just right, and they had a magic phone card for two years that you could use whenever you wanted. Kids today, eh? They don't know how lucky they are.

If you rang the operator from a phonebox and said it swallowed your money, they would give you either a free call, or best of all they would take your address and send you a phone card. We did that for ages, until my dad was curious to know why his 10 year old son was getting lots of letters from BT and went berserk when I told him. Didn't even really use them either!

2024-08-23 07:38:13 +0000 UTCSorry, I hope I don't come across like an annoying YouTube shit but just because I studied it (at school! not a wrong 'un!), with the traditional syllabary of Japanese, everything ends in a vowel sound (except, as Pete groks, -n), so when they transliterate it tends to the trailing half vowel sound thing because those are the bricks they have to work with. I think post-WWII Japan has tried to import fancy new foreign sounds to varying degrees of success and they're all represented with wild new combinations of katakana, but I forgot all those immediately upon leaving school.

I believe that to the untrained eye it would be impossible to tell the difference between me and a listener.
