The Last of Us S2 Finale (full episode reaction)

well well well... that finale was... something, that's for sure.

I really don't know what the hell was going on this season but I think my biggest complaint is the pacing. I can't put my finger on what specifically threw it off but just overall, the pacing felt a bit odd. I didn't play the game so I don't personally know the changes that were made or what was missing but based on what I've seen people say, this was a rather disappointing adaptation?

Tell me what you thought of this season and whether or not you will be watching the next season when it airs.

Overall though... this episode didn't feel like a finale (in the worst way possible)

I find it sad they skip a whole lot of what happens in the game whichs gives more time to find some characters likeable Also seeing how Abby looks like in game would give you a better understanding on why she can do what she does

The show doesn’t even compare to the game, which was really disappointing. In which they dumbed Ellie down a lot and made her incompetent. Which it wasn’t the actress’s fault, but the writers.

I’m not gonna try to change your opinion when it comes to the show but as far as tlou fans go, a lot of people trashed the second game when it came out too, even though it was a compelling story people were just mad bc Joel died and didn’t want to give it a chance. I don’t know if playing the second game would’ve made you enjoy this season more, but I liked it (I agree the pacing was weird mainly bc of how they’re having to split one game into multiple seasons). My biggest issue is like you said, telling us from the get go why Abby killed Joel really throws everything off, bc part of the draw of the second game for me is playing to find out why she did it. Also (last thing I swear 😅) I think the actress they cast for Abby is spot on attitude-wise, but game Abby is built like a truck bc she spent years training with her revenge in mind, so the fact that you kept pointing out how small she is was cracking me up. I wish the actress could’ve bulked up for the role or something, it would make it more believable.

As a great fan of the second game, I tried to give multiple chances to this season, even though they decided to completely shift from the original tone of the game. In the end I can say that I don't like how they made Ellie so unserious, from start to finish. I thought it was gonna change after the Nora scene, but no, Ellie keeps making jokes even in this episode, where she should be absolutely devasted by her own actions, but at the same time still looking for revenge. In the game she is always serious/sad, even annoying for the player at time, but in the show she is annoying for all the wrong reasons. That being said, I found the last scene pretty much perfect, nearly identical to the midpoint in the game. Your "anger" or better, your "lack of interest" in the idea of watching and following Abby next season is exactly how we gamers felt. We didn't want to play anymore, we didn't care. Then you start to ease into the character, you start to understand her. The only problem is that non-gamers will have to wait years before watching and then being able to get back to the point this season ended, so that's a bit worrying. Personally, the second part of the game, the one you spend following Abby's footsteps is much more interesting and well written then the first, and I hope they're going to be able to recreate that in season 3. After watching this season, I normally would have had zero interest in watching the next, but knowing what comes after, I can still get excited about it. So, all in all, I understand your frustrations, and this season was a total mess (still enjoyable for me), but every gamer who actually liked TLOU2 will tell you that what's coming is the best part of the story.

I personally liked this season (and I've played the 2nd game). I'm not surprised non-game players are a little dissatisfied with the end and the set up for next season. That is easily the most controversial bit in the game, and there are plenty of people who stopped playing at that point. The structure is almost identical between the show and the game. The only difference is you don't know the doctor was Abby's father until after she confronts Ellie in the theater. In the game, you play Ellie and Abby back and forth in the intro with no idea who Abby is until you lead Joel into a trap and Abby kills him. Then you play exclusively as Ellie through Seattle Days 1-3 (with flashbacks between each day). It cuts to black with Abby holding a gun to Ellie, and then you're playing Abby's flashback where you discover she was the doctor's daughter. Then you see Joel's death again through her eyes, and then it cuts to Abby waking up on Seattle Day 1 (just like in the show). You then play Seattle Days 1-3 as Abby. Abby's story has some of my favorite parts of the game, so I'm looking forward to seeing those next season. I'm glad they confirmed S3 already because they probably knew this ending was going to be controversial for non-game players.

After watching the finale I can say I enjoyed this season as a whole. I think it was a good adaptation similar to season 1 compared to the game although season 1 was a full story while this is 1/3 of the story. I can't wait for season 3 as it is my favorite part of the story.
