Tour Diary 9/14: About Nowhere In Particular

First, it would behoove me to say the following: I am not going to share the name of the venue(s) or location(s) I may be referring to in this post. Feel free to speculate, but I will neither confirm nor deny any suspicions as to when the events described occurred. This is because I don't want to accidentally encourage online drama and cause undue harm to the venue(s) in question, who should maybe refund some tickets but should not be mobbed by social media zombies who think every slight nuisance is a matter of life and death again. Please keep in mind that even if you think you know for sure when this happened, it would be really stupid and unethical to start some mob drama over it on even the slimmest chance you're wrong. I'm just sharing this story as a vent and to apologize to anyone who had an experience like this at a show of mine.

But either way, I would like to apologize to any fans who purchased a ticket to a show that had unbeknownst to me and my team oversold the maximum legal capacity of their room to score more sales and therefore made it so some had to stand in the other room, where they could not see the stage or hear the speakers. If this happened to you at any point, please know that I know exactly which show it happened at and I will never book that venue again, and if I catch wind of a fellow artist booking a show there, I will adamantly advise them not to.

I'd also like to apologize if you went to a show where my performance was hindered by an onstage monitor mix that could not properly overcome the sound of a howling vent over the stage that sounded like heavy machinery and microphone feedback and made it impossible for me to hear myself. If that onstage mix was repeatedly feeding back, deafening me to the point of hurting my vocal intonation and ear tuning, and causing screeches and squeals to hit the audience while I repeatedly requested the engineer do anything about it mid-performance, please know that I know exactly which show it happened at and I will never book that venue again.

There was a venue on this run that must find an alternate climate control solution, as its wildly loud and feedback-resembling onstage noise currently makes it extraordinarily difficult to perform in without an in-ear mix and/or a loud band, and it does not even suffice to keep the room cool enough to perform properly in or accommodate those with heat sensitivities. Were it a DIY, dive bar, or basement venue, I wouldn't complain so much - that's part of what you get underground, and its part of the charm if its at all expected and everyone's just trying their best - but this restaurant/bar/club hosts major acts and claims to be 300 capacity or higher despite legally being really 195.

I hope that if you were at this show you were able to enjoy the set despite a not insignificant portion of the audience clearly having come to the show with the intention of disrupting my performance. Even a fellow artist, who normally seems incapable of complaining about even the most unfortunate performance circumstances due to their gracious character and radical gratitude, referred to what I told them the audience was like for my set as them trying to "dominate" me. A disrespectful portion of an audience is not uncommon, and I've gotten much better at handling them, but I'd like to apologize to anyone who got less from the show because of the disrespect the troublemakers (by virtue of behaving in such a way toward the performance) showed you, and anything they took from you by being essentially impossible to do my show for. I would not have been able to speak more than a few words without being interrupted by heckles and random screams, let alone controlled the timing or silence as necessary for standup without those in the audience who wanted to be the center of attention at the expense of me and others in the room and tried to take over the show.

I hope that if at any show I had to resort to foregoing the standup and spoken work and the more recent, more challenging, or more delicate songs to playing songs from years ago that I could afford to have sound like garbage, and stumbled and fumbled through them due to not having played them in years, that you still enjoyed hearing me err on the side of performance art and didn't feel left out for missing my show as it normally would be. Hopefully it was instead for most of you a treat to get something different than any other city on this tour.

If you were annoyed at the venue staff openly mocking me for certain staging preferences I had expressed (a standard part of any show), don't worry about it. I think my rejection of their default stage look may have offended them and that may have been part of why the quality of some of their work was so compromised. I could be wrong, I was told and could tell there were other challenges, but I'm not certain. I've seen the breakdown, and it's a little insulting to be treated that way despite the money I made for them on what is normally not a go-to concert night, but it would not be the first time a venue dragged their feet or were vocally disrespectful toward me and my team in front of guests or staff over something petty.

If you happened to attend the most painful performance of my career, I hope it was not apparent it was that, and that my floundering for a strategy that allowed me to exist onstage halfway comfortable worked out and made for am okay time for you.

Only a few shows left on the run. Gotta make sure to finally get a good night's sleep before the next one, because I been running on empty and that has not helped me handle challenges gracefully. Then it's time to head home and start wrapping things up. More info on the coming changes to the Patreon soon.

Thanks as always for your support, see ya in Portland!

Love, -ww

I was at one of the shows I believe is referenced here, I am prone to sensory overload and I was really pushing my limits to go see your show, but you're one of the only artists I can say actually aids my recovery from my various issues, so I said fuck it, I HAVE to be there. I was at the overbooked show, and when I got overstimulated I needed to step away for just a few minutes, and of course that means I got banished to the shadow realm (the side room where you can't actually see). Despite all this, it was still super worth going. The setlist was perhaps not what you wanted it to be, but it was a super unique show and it was great to see you live. <3 I hope you are well.

Man, looks like I got lucky with the Columbus show. I'll remember that night forever. I hope the last leg of the tour goes better!

Pestering Jester

Echoing everyone else, you had to deal with so many extenuating circumstances but you killed this hypothetical show. And even tho the venue and audience was terrible it made me very happy to see you in my imaginary city. I hope someday you return to this land of make-believe but if not I’m willing to travel anywhere to see you again cuz your live performance is incredible. I hope the rest of the tour goes fantastically for you.

JOJO

I think the show I was at this was probably one of the ones mentioned here - for what it’s worth you pulled off such a great show for us despite the sweltering heat and obnoxious people in the crowd. Seriously we had such a wonderful time and your performance was great! Left with a huge dumb smile on my face and I’m so glad I went. I hope the crowd/heat/venue from this show doesn’t put you off from coming back here in the future. And I hope the rest of the tour goes more smoothly for you!

Being my first post-2020 show, I thought it was really great despite the many venue issues. My wife has only listened to some of your stuff here and there but thought performance-wise you were super well rehearsed. Hope the rest goes smoothly!

Cream Shoes

Man. Phoenix was amazing. Even if we all started to die of heat stroke. My gf, who thinks I'm obsessed, literally said, "You sound the same as you do on your album vs. Real life" that's a huge compliment, cuz she is not a Will Wood fan, its a fight between Will Wood music and her music ha cuz she thinks I over play ya.. But she really enjoyed it, so thank you. It was hot, the venue was.....weird..but we had one of the best times of our lives, and we both got to meet you, her "He's obsessed with you" and my awkward fist bump and compliment to you and the show. It was really good but fyi the Van Buren is the best venue for your fan size, check it out.

I just hope for the sake of that city that you'll be willing to preform at it again in a better venue. If I had hypothetically been at a show like the one you described and they had to resort to heat solutions as absurd as, for a random example, pointing a giant fan at the stage from behind the merch table near an open door, or something equally silly and unprofessional, I am sure that you're skilled pivots in dealing with the challenges would have still made it one of the best concert experiences of my life and I would hope to see you perform again someday. I'm sorry that you had to experience that place.

Ben Evans

as someone who may or may not have been at said show, i think you handled the situation the best way possible and still made it a special experience. i hope the rest of the tour goes well!

tomie

This tour has been significantly less challenging, had significantly fewer issues, and has only had one or two shows that I didn't feel good about. Been an absolute pleasure, I'm just sharing the interesting stories!

William

I don't know what gets into some of these people man that's awful I hope the rest of the tour goes better!

Colin Fogt

What the hell. Hoping these next shows and venues aren't like those, nobody deserves that bs.

grayson

im so fucking sorry will, i think i was at a venue not to be named show heheh and im very sorry some of the venue sound ppl were being awful. i could hear them being assholes. same w the audience YELLING and trying to dominate, it was very fucking annoying !!! i think you did a wonderful job, meeting you was very lovely and i felt fucking terrible that it was so hot for you, i wish you couldve taken a break or something. i was right next to a fan so i stayed cool but i also know the audience was rly heating up. i wanted to hear more songs off of the latest album but you played one of my new favorites so thank you!! and thank you for playing old ones as well, i think they sounded wonderful live :) i loved your jokes and set and even though i could tell the vibe was off once the audience started to get more demanding, you played it off very nicely. overall i hope this doesnt discourage you from returning to this city/part of the state, if you tour in the future that is. because you put on a really great show regardless of the unforeseen circumstances.

naki

Quite a lots of different challenges this time around that haven’t seemed to be something as much of a hassle last tour. Although it was a hindrance it seems like the only thing that can be done is to figure out how to self manage in those instances. In the moment of those occurrences there’s nothing one can really do but adjust to the situation and take charge (easier said then done). Have a decent rest and enjoy your tea.

Lunar Scapes

Oh my god I'm so sorry, somtimes I can't believe people/adults act the way they do sometimes.. you deserve better treatment and I hope you recieve it the next show.

Aryn

jesus christ?? hope these go well
