How We Make The Comics!

Hey everyone!

It’s Andy here! Along with directing and co-writing, I also oversee the making of the Eddsworld comics. Now, I know what you’re all thinking: ‘Andy! Just what exactly is the process of creating a super cool Eddsworld comic strip before it gets published to the official website?’

I am so glad you asked!

All comics go through the same general process and since we’ve been doing it for so long now, we’ve basically got it down to an art … [I’ll get my coat …!] Let’s take a look at ‘Thinking’, a comic strip from Wayne Degen, and the various stages it went through, from pitch to published!

Comic Process

1. First of all, the basic comic strip will be pitched from one of our team members. Normally it’s a rough sketch with dialogue either written directly onto the sketch, or on a separate accompanying document.

2. Then, I will look over it to decide if we want to move forward with it. If we do, then a ‘first pass’ is done where we consider any changes we might want to make. It’s always good to get these in as early as possible to avoid more revisions for the artist later. Sometimes we will do a ‘redline pass’ over the sketch as it’s easier to explain changes visually. You’ll notice in the example that in panel two has changed slightly – Tom has been enlarged and his angle has been altered for a more dramatic effect.

3. Then we have the ‘clean up pass’ which is where the artist sends over a new version with the redline changes and tightened inks. Once again, we have a look and provide feedback where needed.

4. Finally, we get the fully coloured version back, sometimes with the lettering already added. At this stage, 99% of feedback has been given so this is the last stage to be approved. Once signed off, the comic strip is queued on the website and social media to be posted.

So that’s it!

We’re so lucky here at Eddsworld to have such a talented team of creative people who pitch and draw our comic strips – we are truly never without a whole host of great comics ready to go!

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about our process! What other things would you guys like to learn about?

Catch you next time!

- Andy
