CLIP: Those flowers are up to something
Added 2024-02-01 04:06:25 +0000 UTCHah. Chicken run, ever seen it? Anyway, here's some Flower animation for the upcoming Flower cartoon.
Drawing and animating all of the flower's different gestures and animations was really fun. I like seeing how far I can push what the eyes and the "hands" do without completely breaking their logic. What is that logic? Well:
1. The leaves always have two tips each
2. The eyes can never close or have eyebrows
Technically there was a shot in the first part where its eyes were half-lidded, but that was by the other animator and it looked good and so I didn't wanna make him redo anything. Still, the eyes don't close I don't think! And no eyebrows.
As you can see in this clip, I found ways to convey blinking or winking or just expressions in general while sticking to those rules. I think the "pointer finger" pose when it's pressing the telephone keys looks really good too.
Oh, pay attention to the animation of the phone getting picked up here too!!! Only because I spent a lot of time making that look good. I had to really think "How would this little flower approach lifting up a phone with only its two little leaf hands?"
Often in animation, you can get away with conveying things in really swift, non-specific motions. Here, though, I think it was just such an unusual circumstance that I needed to make sure there was some logic in how the phone gets grabbed and lifted from its pedestal.
One more thing I can say about this clip, which is something I've purposefully omitted: this scene has one of my favorite line reads from the VA, who I now know is Chase Corbin. I was not at all expecting the final resulting delivery from what I had written, which caught me off guard so much that it made me laugh out loud I'm pretty sure. So get hyped for that! He really knocked it out of the park with this one, above and beyond type stuff. Almost makes me wish we could see the flower again someday.
