PICTURE: "Extra Lives" models and concepts

For all these Mashed videos with Sonic, I've been going off the same template I drafted all the way back in Clone Chaos, but modifying the linework and colors a bit for each new project.
For this one, we've got a very dark and desaturated palette, as to match the more mortifying setting and tone. Also, since all the animators can work on Clip Studio now, I'm aiming for a more universally textured style on the linework! Previously I had to use textured elements sparingly due to other animators working with vector more than raster.
We've also got an adorable looking Classic-styled Sonic here too. My default style of drawing the characters always leaned on something of an inbetween of Sonic's rubberhose-y Classic aesthetic and the more detailed "aged-up" look of the modern, so it was an interesting task to lean all the way into one of those styles enough to make it look distinctly different. Changing the quills, the shoes, the height, and the palette seems like it did the job.
Along with this character model sheet, we have a little concept collage I put together on the look of the setting! It's a vast, purgatorial void I've dubbed "The Expanse." It's a never-ending straight road lined by checkpoint lamps emitting a dull white, placed below a colorless sky filled with abstract geometry. It's an aimless and empty space, existing beyond all purpose and meaning.
The animatic for part 1 is finished now, and production should be moving forward. There's a lot of enthusiasm for this one, I really hope it turns out as good as I'm envisioning!
