PICTURE: So many sonics

A bunch of model sheet reference drawings of various Sonic designs from the next Mashed video.

My friend King who works on visual development on these videos helped with cleaning up and coloring a lot of these. There's a lot of them that appear in this cartoon! Even more than what you see here. I wanted to make most of them look genuinely gruesome and horrible, a step beyond "cartoonishly beat up" and venturing into designs that genuinely sell the idea that this highly durable fantastical character had been killed.

What's my favorite look of all these? The ball-and-chain design kind of rocks, I have to commend myself there. It might be that one.

I also really like the one I call "Space freeze" Sonic. The one with the bloodshot eyes and patches of hypothermia across his body. We have one that's kind of cartoonishly blue and frozen, like you'd see from an ice hazard in one of the games, but that one is kind of more horrific looking, isn't it? One thing I tried to do is making a lot of these phantoms look distinct, even if there's overlaps in the methods of death. For example, you'll see a lot of different "drowned" Sonics.

This video should be coming out soon. Maybe next week? I actually don't know. MOST of the animation is finished, but there's a lot of crowd scenes to get through until it's all accounted for. So, I'm not really in the loop on the exact timeline. I'm almost finished boarding part 2, though!
