Marvelous Pals #55
Added 2024-07-30 13:06:28 +0000 UTCSitting across from me at the elegantly set table was Isabella, a striking woman with chestnut hair cascading in waves over her shoulders and captivating green eyes that sparkled under the soft lighting of the upscale restaurant. It had been a few days since my conversation with Tony Stark, and a lot had happened since then.
Bucky Barnes had finally woken up, I’d made several trips to Palbagos Island to gather more Paldium for Stark, and Nick Fury had narrowly survived an assassination attempt. Yet, despite the chaos swirling around me, I had resolved to get laid, determined to find some semblance of normalcy and relief from the relentless stress.
Vito had been in my ear constantly, his nagging presence a perpetual source of irritation. Drinking myself into a coma had seemed like a viable option, but ultimately, I decided on finding a date.
Isabella was a perfect distraction. Though I was a bit rusty at the dating game, my arsenal of stories and the combination of a tailored suit and a rented sports car made capturing a woman’s attention all too easy.
I know, I know, that wasn't exactly the best combination to find a life-long partner, but tonight, I wasn’t looking for anything serious—just a brief escape from the madness.
Isabella laughed at one of my anecdotes, her hand lightly touching mine across the table. “You’re quite the storyteller,” she said, her voice melodic and warm.
I smiled, taking a sip of my wine. “Well, when you’ve seen as much as I have, the stories practically tell themselves.” I leaned in slightly, lowering my voice conspiratorially. “And believe me, I’ve seen some things.”
She arched an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh? Like what?”
Before I could respond, the building shook with a thunderous crash. The chandelier above us swayed dangerously, and the sounds of screams and breaking glass filled the air. I jumped to my feet, instinctively positioning myself between Isabella and the source of the commotion.
“What the hell—” I began, but my question was answered as a massive rhino burst through the wall, debris flying everywhere. Riding atop the beast was a towering figure clad in animal pelts, a wild grin on his face.
“Kraven the Hunter,” I muttered under my breath, recognizing the notorious mercenary and big-game hunter. His eyes locked onto mine, and he raised a hand in a mock salute.
“Vito Moretti!” Kraven’s voice boomed across the room. “I’ve been looking for you.”
Seeing this, I couldn't help but rub the bridge of my nose. "Well, there goes any chance of getting laid tonight..." I muttered under my breath, irritation welling up inside me.
Isabella clutched my arm, her eyes wide with fear. “Wha-what’s going on?”
I glanced at her, trying to keep my voice calm. “Looks like we'll have to cut our date short....”
Kraven dismounted the rhino with a graceful leap, landing with a thud that reverberated through the floor. The restaurant patrons scrambled to escape, but Kraven’s men blocked the exits, corralling them like frightened animals.
“Come now!” Kraven called out, his tone almost playful. “Let’s make this a hunt to remember!”
As Kraven approached, I reached into my jacket, fingers brushing against the cool metal of the concealed weapon. “Alright, Kraven,” I said, stepping forward to meet him. “You've officially pissed me off now!”
The hunter’s grin widened, and he lunged at me, fists swinging. The restaurant had become a battleground, and as I fought to keep Kraven at bay, I couldn’t help but think that maybe a quiet night in with a bottle of whiskey might have been a better idea after all.
...
Spider-Man swung onto the scene, landing on the side of a building and surveying the chaos below. The street had turned into a warzone, with Vito and Kraven locked in a fierce battle. It was absolute mayhem. Strange creatures, the likes of which Spider-Man had never seen, were trying to pin down Kraven.
A yellow-furred, bear-like creature wielded a minigun, firing with reckless abandon. Bullets ricocheted off the pavement and nearby cars as Kraven deftly dodged the gunfire, leaping from cover to cover.
Not far away, a serpentine creature with blue fur and the body of a ferret slithered around, launching icy javelins at Kraven. Each spear of ice struck with precision, but Kraven managed to evade them by a hair’s breadth.
Adding to the surreal scene, a gigantic penguin with an admiral's hat shot powerful jets of water at the hunter, creating geysers that erupted with force.
High above, Vanwyrm, a vulture-like beast with majestic wings, soared through the air. Vito rode atop its back, raining arrows down upon Kraven. The hunter was holding his own, but just barely—every movement was computed, every dodge a calculated effort to stay one step ahead of his assailants.
Spider-Man frowned under his mask, trying to make sense of the chaos. On one side was Kraven, an insane hunter who had made it his life's mission to kill Spider-Man and mount his head over a fireplace.
On the other was Vito, a notorious criminal recently pardoned by the government according to the spooks who had contacted Spider-Man lately, but still a criminal nonetheless.
Spider-Man’s instincts screamed at him to swing away, to let these two dangerous men destroy each other. But he knew that it was only a matter of time before their reckless fighting caused casualties among the innocent bystanders.
With a resigned sigh, Spider-Man launched himself into the fray. He webbed up a streetlight, swinging low to get between Kraven and the bear-like creature with the minigun. He shot a web at the minigun’s barrel, yanking it upwards just as it fired, sending bullets into the sky.
"Hey, big guy, how about we tone it down a notch?" Spider-Man quipped, landing on the pavement with a graceful flip.
Kraven took the opportunity to close the distance between him and Vito, but Spider-Man wasn’t about to let that happen. He shot a web at Kraven’s feet, pulling them out from under him. The hunter hit the ground with a grunt, rolling to avoid another icy javelin from the blue-furred creature.
“Spider-Man!” Kraven roared, getting to his feet. “You dare interfere?”
“That's kinda what I do, pal. Haven't we done this before?” Spider-Man replied, shooting webs at the stray icy javelins to prevent them from hitting a car on the side of the road. "Now, I'd appreciate it if someone told me what's going on..."
Vito, atop Vanwyrm, looked down at Spider-Man. “About time you showed up. The bastard whoed up out of nowhere and tried to kill me while I was in the middle of a friggen date!”
Spider-Man shot a web at a nearby car, using it to swing into Kraven and knock him back down. “Let's just get this over with!”
The penguin with the admiral’s hat aimed another jet of water at Kraven, but the hunter leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the blast. Spider-Man shot webs at the ground, creating a sticky barrier to slow Kraven down.
The yellow-furred bear-like creature continued to fire its minigun, the bullets ricocheting off the pavement and sending sparks flying. Kraven darted behind a wrecked car, using it as cover as he tried to find an opening.
Spider-Man swung low, shooting webs at Kraven’s feet again, but the hunter was quick, slicing through the webs with a knife. He retaliated by throwing a smoke bomb at the ground, enveloping the area in a thick cloud of smoke. Spider-Man’s senses went into overdrive, trying to pinpoint Kraven’s movements through the obscurity.
From within the smoke, Kraven launched a series of explosive darts at the blue-furred serpent, which twisted and turned, narrowly avoiding each one. The creature responded by firing a volley of icy javelins, piercing through the smoke and forcing Kraven to keep moving.
Vanwyrm, with Vito still on its back, soared overhead. Vito drew his bow, sending a barrage of arrows down into the smoke. Kraven rolled and leaped, his agility allowing him to dodge most of the attacks, but the sheer number of assailants was overwhelming.
Realizing he was outnumbered and outmatched, Kraven’s eyes scanned the chaos, searching for an escape. He spotted a woman in the distance, a terrified civilian trying to hide behind a parked car. With a sinister grin, he hurled a knife in her direction, forcing Spider-Man to act.
“No!” Spider-Man shouted, launching himself towards the woman. He shot a web at the knife, pulling it off course just in time. But the distraction gave Kraven the moment he needed. The hunter sprinted towards an alleyway, disappearing into the shadows.
Spider-Man landed beside the woman, quickly checking to make sure she was unharmed. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice gentle.
She nodded, tears streaming down her face. “Thank you,” she whispered.
Spider-Man gave her a reassuring smile before turning to Vito. “We need to go after him. He can’t be allowed to get away.”
Vito, still atop Vanwyrm, shook his head. “He's probably long gone by now... besides, chasing down bad guys in funny costumes is your job, not mine....”
Spider-Man frowned, frustration evident in his posture. But there was no time to argue. With a final glance at Vito, he shot a web at a nearby building and took off, swinging through the city in pursuit of Kraven.
The sound of sirens filled the air as the chaos began to settle. Vito watched Spider-Man disappear into the distance, a thoughtful expression on his face. He knew Karven would come back for him again, but for now, he was content to just be rid of him.
He'll simply have to spring a trap and catch him off guard the next time he shows up.
Glancing down, he spotted Isabella, staring at him with wide eyes some distance away. Grinning to himself, Vito had the Vanwyrm swoop down to the streets.
"Maybe my day can be salvaged, after all..."
