When Timor and I decided to start work on the new art style, there was the question as to who to use as our baseline art subject. In the end Jasmine seemed like the perfect fit as we have a decent Inanis art style reference piece, as found in the first line-up image along those she works with. It certainly makes for an easier job to compare with!
The second image is actually an early pre-Inanis style picture, the first actually made of Jasmine. It's included in this pose as it is interesting to see how some aspects of the new style candidates take hints from it!
When it comes to the new style, we have three broad categories: small alterations, large alterations, and more "cute" style for specific comic panels.
In the third piece here we have the "small alterations". in this piece we made some very minor bodyshape/structure changes, mainly in the eyes and somewhat the legs. We also increaced the legnth of fur overall and in some key areas such as the cheeks. Overall not much has changed, however.
The forth piece has the competing "large alterations" concept. The design here is meant to have much more feral tomes to the anthropomorphic structure, with the springhares classic shortened arms, a posture more leaning forward and tail used to balence further. Also the hips and legs were changed as well as the feet notibly more true to life springhare-like. This style is far more animalistic then the "least alterations", with the natural animals traits given much more focus, though Jasmine will still use technology, clothing and the like as normal in the comics.
Lastly was the oddball style consideration, and one that caused the most discussion with Timor. There were some thoughts on how to do a "cute" style for certain panels, and despite the fact that such a style would need to be heavilly simplified to have the look and feel desired, that impacted on visual clarity. On one hand we could have kept with a more "anthro" cute style, but I has also toyed with the idea of flipping a charcter's ferla/anthro bodyshape when they were drawn as "cute", for both humor and artistic creatie reasons.
In the end both possabilities were sketched, as can be seen here. On the left is the more Anthro bodyshape for the cute style, while the right shows the concept for a more feral bodyshape. Again, this does not affect the comic plotline at all, and simply acts as a bit of fun for specific pages.
I still haven't fully decided which options to use for the comics normal art style, or the cute style, and would be interested to see what you wonderful Supporters might think of the styles. is there one you love, one you hate? Do you have any thoughts or comments about the art, philosophy or style? Or is there something you feel I might have not thouht about that's worth condering? I'd love to hear any and all of such thoughts! You can comment on this piece, or perhaps use the discord server to discuss in the Supporters area (probably in the Development channel!)
