Because the word fiance got dropped, here a little fun fact: Magicians are encouraged/expected/"forced" to marry and "produce" the next generations of magicians as early as possible. The targeted age for that is something like 16. That is because there is still only a small amount of magicians in comparison to the total population. It's something like only 10% of the population of japan can use magic and even lower is the percentage of magicians with acceptable and useful degree of magical talent. As you saw in the intro in Ep. 1, the world is in an arms race to produce magicians for magical research and mostly for military purposes.
