I honestly started this series as a placeholder while I waited for more Dorley, but Maxine has stolen my heart more than I could have ever hoped. She is precious and amazing, as are you. Thank you for these incredible gifts of literature. This may be super obscure, but Maxine and the Squad gives me the same vibes I got reading Ellen Hayes' Saga of Tuck, which was a vital step in my own egg cracking way back in the 2000s internet.

I've been so invested with Maxine's character and so in love with this story as a trans girl who a really hard time coming out. Unlike Max, I knew when I was much younger, but just like him, I wore a face for my family and it nearly ended me.

I really wonder what it was that finally cleared the blockage in his head, whether it was Maxine quietly pleading that she’s just his daughter, or Kennedy going off with both barrels almost immediately, but it really worked! I don’t know what’s sweeter, him being like “I am not leaving my daughter in downtown San Diego after dark,” or him talking to the receptionist because he recognized that Maxine was having a panic attack.

I hoped, when he tromped off after Kennedy’s berating, that he was setting off to make good on being Maxine’s Dad, tho didn’t want to prematurely make assurances. Maxine’s been (and still is) going through the wringer, but this has some good hope going. So Luca showing up for her, listening, adapting, then fighting for her is a balm. I especially liked how he was a proper, caring *parent* at the LGBT Center. Caretaker, then Guardian, and I was hit hard & wonderfully by the line “Maxine! This is a strange neighborhood. And it’s after dark. I’m not leaving my daughter alone here.” Also: “You’re my tough little daughter.” Maybe he can match Lynn Scott’s awesomeness some day. Maxine’s struggle with imposter syndrome and the necessary lies is so relatable. And all the barriers. She deserves all the hugs and cuddles.

Not to mention that Joan Jett is an absolute badass and goals for the attitude to project as a trans girl! (Yes Im talking about myself here. Been Punk/Goth since I found the subcultures.)
