2025-06-14 18:48:48 +0000 UTCRomance Dawn was Oda's published draft years before One Piece. Technically, our One Piece is Romance Dawn Ver 3, and this episode animated Ver 2 with pirate Garp. Shanks gave him the hat in Versions 1 and 3. The reason our Garp wore a dog hat at first was to hide that he's Luffy's grandpa from people who read Romance Dawn when it was published. Note this Luffy has no scar on his cheek. See image: https://imgur.com/a/2nyS0di Before anything, Oda had some chapters and shorts that were not successful and some that won silver medals. Then he sketched characters like Monkey D. Pao, girl Rezel, samurai Ryuma, and knight Romeo around the time he was 19. At one point 'Nami' was sketched with a cyborg arm wielding a giant axe. She became swordswoman Silk in Romance Dawn Ver 1, then Ann in RD Ver 2. Silk also got an OVA after Thriller Bark where the crew meet her in a retelling of Romance Dawn Ver 1. Ryuma was also a protagonist alongside Pao before becoming Zoro. Romeo was a swordsman medieval knight type before becoming Naruto/Sanji.
