Frequency of Q&A videos
Added 2018-07-13 09:41:03 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
I've had a lot of feedback relating to Monday's Q&A video. If I'm honest, I was surprised to see how positive everyone was about it! I didn't think many people would be as interested in just a simple Q&A video compared to the typical TIK-lecture style video, so I'm obviously happy with the way it's gone. And I definitely want to do more of them. Since you guys are the ones who will get the most benefit from them, I think it's only right that you get to decide how often we do them.
Now, I have been having another issue behind the scenes, which I was going to talk about in the update on Tuesday, but now I've done the Q&A video, there's an obvious solution. The typical Monday video usually takes 4-5 days to make (yep). Coupled with just maintaining the channel and Patreon, this then leaves me with little time to work on Battlestorm videos. In fact, there hasn't been a Battlestorm this year yet, and this is primarily because my time is eaten away by the Monday videos. In the past, I would 'disappear' for a while to work on the Battlestorms, and then reappear a few months later with a finished video. And, consious that I want Crusader, Courland and Stalingrad out asap, I have been considering either reducing the number of Monday videos in order to work on the Battlestorms - or even, 'disappearing' for a while to finish Crusader. Obviously, I don't really want to do that, especially since my New Years Resolution was to do a video every Monday, and I think frequent posting is good.
But I think there may be a solution to both problems! Monday's Q&A video was all done in a single day. This then freed up an entire week, which I've used to hammer away at Crusader's script. I've actually almost doubled my progress through the script in a few days, and the week's not over yet! I think I've done more work on Crusader this week than in any other week since I began working on it. Therefore, I'm thinking that, rather than 'disappearing' for a while, it might be better if we do more Q&A videos. This would then have the benefit of still making Monday videos possible, you would have more opportunities to ask me questions, it would free me up every other week, and would mean you'd see Battlestorm videos out more often.
But obviously, I wanted to run it by you before I made a hasty decision, because the flip-side is that there would be less TIK-lecture type videos per month. So, how would you feel if we made a Q&A video a bi-weekly thing rather than a monthly thing? So every other week would be a regular TIKhistory type video, and the weeks in-between would be a Q&A video. Would you be alright with that? I've set up a poll for you to vote, but please post any other ideas and suggestions or thoughts below. I'll discuss the results and make a decision about this in Tuesday's update.
Also, I know some of you have been private messaging me. I'll try get back to you asap! Been concentrating on Crusader while I've had the chance :D
Cheers!

Excellent! I've come to a bit of a compromise which should speeeed things up considerably, but keep people happy.
2018-07-17 16:07:34 +0000 UTCThanks for the feedback and suggestions! You're probably right about the frequency, which is why I've done a bit of a compromise (as you'll see in the just-published Patreon update video). There's nothing to say that the Q&A videos have to be an hour long - the only reason the last one was because there were a lot of questions.
2018-07-17 16:05:33 +0000 UTCMy opinion, and it is simply my opinion, but I think an optimal combination of many things is ideal. YouTubes algorithms prioritizes frequent videos. I dont think you can get enough "quality" non repetitive questions on a regular basis to make hour long Q&A videos, and going radio silent for weeks to months at a time would honestly make me kind of sad. Im not saying my suggestion is perfect, but I think a combination of all of these may be a great balance. Maybe give something like this a try: Make a ~15-30m Q&A video a week. Make try and put out a miniature conflict video every week or two, similar to your just published video on Pavlovs house (which was amazing, by the way). Try to limit the amount of effort to no more than a 50/50 split on the next battlestorm documentary, and that mini doc. Also, perhaps think of weekly progress videos that keep your subscribers engaged. Spend no more than an hour or two putting something together keeping everyone up to date and sitting on edge waiting for the next big release.

2018-07-17 05:43:13 +0000 UTCI love the Monday videos, but really I'm here for the Battlestorms. That said I think Sam is right that it is important to get something (anything) out there frequently so that youtube directs traffic your way. That said, if replacing half of the lectures with Q&A gets us Battlestorm faster I'm all for it.
