Friday Rambles and Game Dev Update 2024-11-08

It's the Saturday Friday Rambles. Late again, and short, but I have an excuse this time.

Real Life Stuff

A friend of mine told me to play Unicorn Overlord, a game that will never get a PC release for some reason, so I looked up how much a physical copy of the Switch version was, and it was like 20 bucks cheaper than the E-shop. I am now fully on board with getting physical versions of all my console games. Plus my memory card was full.

So, playing on my Switch for the first time in like a year I got reminded about how it's so much lighter and thinner and quieter than the Steam Deck and that the Switch owns actually. Also I played a lot of Unicorn Overlord. It helped distract from local news or whatever. It's a really fun and a ridiculously beautiful game. And having apparently missed the Vanillaware party that had been going on while I was busy only playing Ace Attorney games and working on game dev, I also bought 13 Sentinels.

Look Back was released on Amazon Prime Video this week, so I watched that. ... Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? If you have a passion for creating any sort of art at all, then I think you'll find some deep personal meaning within it. I'd read the one shot back when it came out in 2021, but I think now, having worked for some time in art and game dev, along with the new dimension an animated adaptation (a masterpiece in its own right) brings, it left way more of an impression on me this time around. Go watch it if you haven't already. I'll wait.

Also, I went out and bought the manga version of the one shot so I can put it on my desk and read it when I'm uninspired.

Goodbye Eri animated adaptation next, please.

I also got sick again this week, but I'm feeling a little better now. But that's why this is late. Sorry.

Game Dev Stuff

Nintendo confirmed this week that the Switch successor (be it Switch 2 or whatever) will be backwards compatible with Switch games, so that's really good news for my next project, the Switch version of Endless Monday Game. You know, for when I finish the update.

One day, I was walking outside and came up with a good title for the update.

I'm calling it "Overtime" and the update "The Overtime Update". Fits the work theme pretty well, and it makes it clear it's an additional chapter. Cool! If you hover over "New Game", it goes back to the original title logo. It took a while to implement this, because my code sucks and I had to work around a lot of crap I wrote for the TGS demo.

Going back to the Real Life Stuff, I was pretty distracted this week by playing Unicorn Overlord, and was feeling pretty crappy for not having any real work done, but then I watched Look Back and I was like... yeah, game dev is hard work and tedious, but if one person can get enjoyment and inspiration from this silly game about stupid things, then it'll be worth doing. Then I thought about the times people came all the way to my booth at TGS to tell me they liked my game and showed me their Steam profile to show off how they 100%'d it and asked for autographs and stuff. And then, filled with inspiration, I made the new logo and fixed a bunch of title screen stuff and wrote some more dialogue. Yes! This is the power of "Inspiration"!!

Then I got sick on Friday and took a small break and played 13 Sentinels a little bit.

Anyway, I'm really cutting it close. I need to finish this by end of this month, at the latest. So next week I'm taking my laptop out to a cafe every day and writing where I have no distractions. I will have the ending done by next week, believe you me. But don't believe in me. Believe in the me that believes in me.

The End

Okay that's it for this week. Hopefully I won't get sick this next week, will avoid distractions, and will have a lot done. Thanks for your support, as always.

I’m glad things seem to be going well! Looking forward to the update :) Seeing Goodbye, Eri was a shock since it’s like one of my favourite books ever, if it’s anything like Look Back’s adaptation it’ll be amazing. Good luck for this week too!

Ooh, Overtime is such a strong name for the update 🔥 Look Back was great, and I appreciate you having announced it finally becoming available on prime. It's fun to hear of others getting hooked on Unicorn Overlord. I only just stumbled onto it a couple weeks ago and it definitely took me a full week before I was able to escape the unyielding grasp which it had on my focus haha, it's so good. Which classes do you think the Endless Monday cast would be if they were in a unit? As soon as I saw you mention that you were playing it, I started considering that as a sketch prompt to explore 🤘 Wishing you the best with the writing sprint.
