Requested: ATEEZ on Dingo Killing Voice

Comments

Very well said

Miya

I’m a little disappointed, but at the same time Ateez is unique . Ateez like to go their own way. They don’t like to follow the “norms” of music. In my opinion no one can compete with Ateez because they’re in their own league. Ateez is just unmatched with their vocals, raps, choreography, MV, and performances. They do it all, and I feel like every song they have shouldn’t be like you said. They have every song for every emotion, and that’s what makes them different.

Miya

I’m a little sad with your reaction, but get it. I’ve seen a ton of reactions to Ateez. Music producers and sound mixers are amazed by their sound and how they use so many things that normally you would think doesn’t work, they make it work. They started with only 10 employees, and Ateez members have a very heavy influence on their sound and their music, so saying it doesn’t suit them is Sad. (They also write and produce some of it as well) but it’s sad Because their music is them. It’s who they are as a group and as individuals. Every album has its own flavor, but they somehow keep that something that makes you go “this is an Ateez song” they’ve both lost fans and gained fans because of it. Some like their more pop-y type albums, where others liked their different sounding albums. They love to try different things musically and constantly challenge themselves. Instead of just being told - stand here sing this part this is yours do this. For a lot of their songs, all members sing the entire song and they pick what sounds best where. (Lots of logbooks and behind scenes) It kind of seems, and this is just my opinion, that what you are looking for is that heavily produced, catchy kpop bop that the industry spits out every second. And that’s just not them. Ateez is always against the grain. But again, that’s what makes them Ateez. They went from a company of a few, totally broke, living all together in a small space, singing in the streets trying to promote themselves, to where they are today by hard work and dedication (and talent obviously) Jongho (the main singer) after Coachella was over, he went back to his vocal coach for more lessons. Even as everyone was praising him for his voice. They never stop challenging themselves or trying to improve. Obviously I’m heavily biased, but I do respect your view and reasoning. Thank you for your reaction. I also would suggest watching immortal songs 2 from June 24,2023. (Immortal songs is live performances allowed only) They sing like this with heavy choreography and their stability while singing while moving as they do is amazing https://youtu.be/N74BBb5rs7U?si=hU2pOoPgvS7GoGkr Thanks again

Hi there new to the patreon wanted to see this in full, yes the production team in dingo have a habbit of fixing the vocals even if they don’t need it, and I have found that a lot of their current music I’m not enjoying as much as I do their old music, so I see where you come from.

Jazzy K

Highly recommend checking out any of their performances of Japanese tracks, particularly Dreamers and Day. I’d say go Inkigayo Live for both!

cheyenne ☕️

Hear them live in concert it’s an experience. I have twice and I promise the live version of these songs are some you need to witness

Thanks for your perspective and for sharing your opinion. :) Music is all subjective but as I’ve been hearing more of their songs I’m starting to really enjoy the different aspects do their voice and artistry. Before I filmed this I didn’t know some of the things you mentioned like them producing their own songs. Respect. 🙏🏼 Thanks for your comment- very informative.

Here is one thing I will say that others probably haven’t. They are in their infancy vocal and musically. While yes they have a ton of songs etc, they didn’t really have the resources for proper teachers until recently. So hearing them here with proper support and cleaner singing makes me so happy as someone who’s followed them from the beginning. A lot of the songs/sections of songs they chose are better as full performances. They are the first group out of their small company and they have limited producers and two of the members majorly create/write the songs along with them. I just don’t think they had the money or fame to have outreach for “it” songs as you say. This isn’t a knock on you or ateez as a whole. I adore their music and style. It’s very me, but I can see where you come from. Each of them has grown so much vocally. Even Jongho here is showing improvement! (Opening up on top notes instead of straining them) Also if you want to hear one of the members that mainly produces and writes and has a really unique kinda trendy voice, hongjoong does lee mujin service. He doesn’t have vibrato and it’s more nasal? Just more influenced by his music inspos (mj, Bowie, prince etc) But anyways! I enjoy your reactions because you catch the vocal fun that others tend to miss. Much love! 💕

Em

Well…. I too want 70000 ballads from Jongho and San etc but as far as catchy songs go, it really doesn’t get any better than Guerrilla. Like have you heard the stadiums when they do this song?! 🤯 But Love the commentary and insight from you as well. New perspective is always good.

Gisela Mabel Ortiz Rodriguez

they have a lot of songs that show off their vocals very well but with this killing voice they used a lot of title tracks that get elevated when they dance along to it in a performance because yes ateez has really skilled vocalists but ALSO really skilled performers but because ateez isn't very well known in korea it was important for this killing voice to include their title tracks to let them get more known as killing voices get a lot of attention in general so as an atiny there were a lot of songs I would've rather seen on the killing voice but because i know a lot of the context around this group I get why they chose all of these songs. and to add to everything the type of stuff you didnt like about their title tracks is like a very significant part of ateez' music like it's what makes ateez ateez and it's okay to say you personally don't like it but I can assure you a lot of people like their sound

vimbutnot

I just checked your channel on YT and I saw that a couple years ago you reacted to Jongho (main vocalist) singing love poem with BTOBs Eunkwang and Stray Kids Seungmin. Maybe you can do a re-reaction now! I'd love to see that. Also Jongho has some OST you can react to that are amazing 👏.

Chelsea C

There's a behind the scenes video where they filmed them while recording. The studio doesn't hear the music only they do in their in-ears. The crew could only hear their voices and it sounded exactly the same. This is the link to the video: https://youtube.com/shorts/YOofI7iwCL0?si=9dZiKmYOwJx39Mur

Zharia

I like most of their songs but I definitely have to state that Bouncy khot chili peppers sounded the worst live and that not because I don't enjoy the song, its just they used so much autotune on the chorus for the mv that it sounds completely off live. I really wish they would have done inception on this dingo.

Autumn Gibbs

Hmm I disagree about the songs not fitting them. I understand they could flex their vocals more with different songs, but the entirety of their identity and color as a group is the pirate-themed songs which is their go-to concept and kind of song style if you’d even call it that. They established this identity from the very beginning so it suited them perfectly if you know them as more than just singers. If they didn’t have to these songs, there would be no ateez or the ateez we all know that makes them unique from other groups. Their songs aside from personality are what made me gravitate towards them. If you’ve been an ATINY, you would know they could sing without a certain kind of song and they don’t need to prove it because it’ll bleed through eventually. Plus, their live stages are always 100% live so if you go to their concerts or watch live performances on YouTube, you’ll already know they aren’t fake. And I disagree their songs don’t have catchy melodies. Maybe to some, these songs aren’t ideal but in the world of kpop where it stemmed from western music but sounds barely like it in most cases, it’s very unique and catches the attention of a lot of the general public imo (a lot of kpop songs recently imo now have sounded similar or the same and I need something new which Ateez and some of my other favorite groups provide - that’s why they’re in my top list of groups I love). But ya these are really good songs to showcase what they got and to promote themselves as a group. I also want to note that along with their production team Edenery, the group produces several of their songs themselves as well so no hate but I feel like you saying these songs don’t suite them kind of feels like disregarding their hard work and efforts in general but also in producing their own songs. I find any group that can produce a diamond in the rough because it shows the creativity and it enhances (for lack of a better word) the image their trying to portray even more (if that makes sense). Also, other people brought up a good point that I forgot to mention. They are performance kings and that’s their main focus. Their title tracks (which were pretty much almost all the songs in the killing voice) are to show off their performances while their bsides are to provide more variety. I can see how most of the songs seem choppy and instrumentally heavy but that’s the point. Those songs are perfect to dance while singing to and the instrumentals are unique by itself, way different from your typical kpop group, which in and of itself proves marketable in the kpop scene since the point of releasing music in kpop is basically to act as an attention-stealing arena. I think people would be lying if they said their music and style doesn’t grab their attention whether or not they like it. I mean I’m no expert, but I just see that setting yourself as a group apart from others is already a valuable marketing strategy in a music industry that’s too competitive to the point of being almost ridiculous. Your title tracks show who you are and show how different you can be against other groups, while your bsides show you aren’t just what you’re title tracks are and showcases to the listener that you shouldn’t pigeonhole a group based on their title tracks only. But my main point is in kpop, you either be competitive and unique or quickly fade into the mass of groups debuting every minute (if you get what I’m saying) if you can’t at the bare minimum satisfy those

Also, thought you might like this track. It’s an OST sung by Jong Ho for a korean drama, insanely good. https://open.spotify.com/track/7KxDaaCFPOm6p8Hg4CIhQ6?si=0JcILFNSQ0KHQjaC2M_WPA

I had the same thoughts when i first came across them. They had insane vocal talents and what caught my attention was a live performance of theirs. Which made me check out their discography. And its been 4 years since I became a fan. Though i do listen to them, i do agree that I would die for more songs like Utopia, Turbulence and empty box. But their title tracks are really good for when i need something to pump me up (like the gym😂)

Jo Anne

Your perspective was interesting during this, and it’s okay that you don’t like their music. That does not mean they are being poorly served by the music they make, it means you recognize their skill even when you don’t like their music and are not the target audience. It might be useful to realize that KQ, their production company, is a *production* company. They never intended to debut an idol group. The production team that creates their music creates very layered, intricate, textured sound, and their individual voices are used as instruments within the music. The producers are astoundingly skilled in their own right, as are their choreographers (who are also their backup dancers and trainers). The production team (who writes, composes, and produces all their music, including the ones you liked) largely do not create melodic music, they create very rhythmic music, as Ateez is a dance group. It can also be referred to as “Noise Music”, similar to Stray Kids. Basically it takes the “wall of sound” concept and makes it even more awesome 😎. The music is created first, and then they each sing the whole thing, “auditioning” for each line, according to whose voice and delivery suits the song best. Their music is not written to show off their voices in the way you are hoping. Their voices are chosen to serve the music. In addition, KQ invests heavily in Their training and development. When Ateez members want to improve something, they are given access to training, coaches, teachers to improve. All of them have come very far since they started, because they are all very dedicated to singing, dance, and artistry. KQ as a company does many things differently than most of the K-pop industry, and it’s important to realize that the K-pop industry does everything differently from the way the western world creates music. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing, it’s just important to realize that they are not Ateez because of their talent, that are talented because their drive to succeed meant they were able to get here. They’ve been trainees from ages 14 and 15, ( in Jongho’s case, age 13), while attending high school full time, and working professionally. Many of them started with zero natural skill or ability in what they later become known for excelling in…idols are made, not born. Jongho’s solo works are more what you are looking for because he loves ballads and has sung many of them as soundtracks and individual releases. Despite their vocal skill, Ateez is not a vocal focused group, they are a performance (dance) focused group. They always have been, their astoundingly brilliant dance has been the foundation of their success from the beginning. It is simply that they did not settle for that, and chose to excel in every area, pushing forward with vocal development as well. There ARE idol groups that are focused heavily on vocals, and the music reflects that. ATEEZ is not one of them. It’s just their drive to improve and keep up with the best of the best that keeps them developing vocally. We always say the worst singer in Ateez could be the lead singer of any other idol group, and the worst dancer in Ateez would easily be the lead dancer of any other idol group. The music of Ateez will always be what it is because their skills were developed to serve the music created for them, not the other way around. You don’t have to like their musical choices, even though I, for one, love their music more than any other music I have encountered in 40 years. Thank you for appreciating their vocal skill, anyway. They would be pleased to hear it, and we, their fans who adore their sound, like seeing them appreciated.

Seonghwa's high notes in Utopia floored me! 💕

Clare 💕

they recently just dropped the studio recording behind the scenes for their new album, you can see their real raw vocals

I also have to agree with others that the songs they performed here (the ones you weren’t typically a fan of in terms of production and melodies) are their top songs. It may be surprising, but it’s true! They have to compete with some strong performance groups, but what helps them stand out is performing everything live, dancing their asses off and putting on a SHOW. They can do all three pretty flawlessly and consistently, and that’s rare with 4th and 5th gen kpop groups.

Maria

I have to agree with you! I am an ATINY through and through and I can appreciate their talent (I believe they are the most talented 4th gen kpop group and top 10 overall in kpop) and I believe their song choices for this Killing Voice could have included more of a variety of their discography. I honestly felt bad when I first watched this because it wasn’t hitting for me like they normally do, and it had NOTHING to do with their talent. I was hoping to hear more of their softer, well-rounded songs included in the lineup for this Killing Voice. It was just banger after banger. I think they ended up mostly choosing songs that showcased their intense performances. Or maybe they could have rearranged the placement of the songs? If this is one of your first times reacting to them it can seem like they don’t have much variety, but they do! I also feel like they chose these songs because when they perform them live, people often discredit their talent and say they aren’t singing live or performing live when they do. I hope you dive deeper into their discographies and their live performances so you can understand who they are as a group more, because I feel like you wouldn’t be disappointed if you continue to give them a chance. Thanks for your reaction and opinion! I’m looking forward to more ATEEZ reactions!

Maria

I appreciated your thoughts and honesty on this killing voice. Like you said, music preference is all subjective. Personally I LOVE Ateez’s discography and these songs. They do have more of the songs you would be looking for as others have already mentioned. I personally think that for some of these songs, one HAS to see the performances to understand their full impact. Like you said they have such strong and untapped vocals, but their performances are some of the most fun, high energy that I’ve seen. They have so much fun with these “busy” songs and I can really tell they enjoy performing them (the rest of the Coachella set is a great example of this). In my opinion, I find their sound sets them apart. So many of their songs just have the Ateez feel and I think its because of the hand Hongjoong (rapper with the dark hair here) and their production team (Edenery) have in their music. I appreciated your honest thoughts, but have to respectfully disagree that they don’t have the right songs. I love every single one of their songs. One of the few groups with a no skip discography for me, and I listen to a lot of different groups. Of course taste is subjective and they have lots of room for growth and new music directions that I’m sure I’ll love just as much, that’s just my opinion. Thanks again for the reaction and I hope you’ll be looking more into Ateez in the future.

Aubrey L

They do not do vocal tuning on killing voice because I’ve heard mistakes from other groups on KV.

Samantha

Although the title tracks you've heard haven't been for you, I'm happy you gave your honest opinion and acknowledged Jongho's vocals (the one on the far left) he can indeed sing haha!! To answer your question, they do some processing for killing voice, but their completely live singing is really good too! Especially hearing Jongho live I'm always so impressed by how powerful he sounds. I hope you can give some of their b-sides a chance (I'm a huge fan of ballads which I know a lot of fans aren't, so I recommend Everything, Be With You, Star 1117 for some slower songs). And just because I always wish more people appreciated him, Jongho's performances on Lee Mujin Service and Immortal Songs (So you and 내일 할 일). The second one actually just came out today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XfeoJCEfWc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1emOzW8ZBk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye1wWn6CHtk

They are insanely talented vocalists and performers. Their discography is complex and in my opinion doesn’t follow any one genre. Never afraid to take a chance and do their own thing. They are not trying to be commercial or anything other than themselves. I can see where if you are looking for a clean, power ballad type song, these may not have been it for you. I can promise you though, their songs appeal to a global audience on multiple levels. Thank you for appreciating them as vocalists. I do think their songs show who they are and highlight their talent in many ways. Jongho, the main vocalist that you pointed out several times, has a few solo performances you should check out. His solo performance on Immortal Songs is still once of my favorites. https://youtu.be/dyWNvMxaSIk?si=znDYljws98zFs-Nq

You would definitely love Not too late live version it’s really good and it’s close to what you’re looking for if not what you want from them

Rian kelly

I kind of see what you’re getting at but I actually think their songs are perfect for them, maybe not in the market you are thinking of but for kpop and for what they are as a group, performance being their bread and butter their songs really bring that forward. First and foremost Ateez was more of a dance/performance group but they happen to be able to sing and rap incredibly well. They have the type of music you’re talking about spread out through their discography but it’s not really their overall style. I like how you appreciate how good they’re vocally and obviously the type of music isn’t going to be everyones cup of tea and that’s ok

LoveMeKnot

While I do agree most of their song dont make justice to their talented vocals, I tell you, there is no way to succeed in the western market as a kpop idol with ballads or slower songs. I think is fair to explaim that Ateez came from a very small company and in korea is very very hard to get any chance or attention if you are in a boy group in an unknown agency. They got attention in the western from a video of them dancing pre debut and all the oportunities given were not in korea and mostly in the western. So their title tracks that are usually the song that catch more attention is usually more on the hype side but they do have many beautiful b sides where they showcase their vocals more. The engagement from western fans with more slower ballads and songs overall is a lot smaller. I personally love their songs in all styles cause their voices and personalities come thru their work regardless of genre and I love that but music is for everybody at the end of the day there will be always preferences. To me as long as they have those b sides that bring me the emotions and the power of their vocals, I am happy cause cause as a metal fan I am used to louder music. Oh btw that was raw live I don't believe they did anything particular with the vocals cause they are used to sound great live, maybe the production did a bit of compression I am not sure, but they have lots of live concerts while dancing where they sound very good not perfect cause dancing and singing is hard but besides the breath etc the voices are very clear. Oh btw, till today dispite Ateez having a very big fandom now outside of Korea, in their country they are fairly ignored cause the small agency thing. Because they are doing well outside, now slowly people are getting interested on them there and Jongho the main vocal has a few ballads OSTS that you can see his potential.

Aeon Flux

Thanks for the comment & opinion! After I filmed that I’ve honestly had the hooks stuck in my head especially Guerrilla - I’m going to check out the official Coachella performance that dropped and film the reaction and I’ll have to find the songs you’re talking about that are vocals focused but didn’t get as much love! I’d love to listen!

Justin Burke Reacts

Ngl I’ts disheartening to hear you poop all over their songs, throughout the entire performance, which they help write and produce themselves. Obviously im thrilled you can hear their talent, and appreciate your opinion but I entirely disagree. I wouldn’t want them to change their songs, their songs are what make them ateez. Most of these were title tracks which are supposed to be catchy and fun, not made to show off. You talked about how if they had a vocally heavy written song they’d blow up, but they’ve done that previously and got barely any engagement outside of already established fans. Work was solely made for fun, not to be groundbreaking, it’s just an introduction to the new world. Again I appreciate your take but won’t be tuning in for any more Ateez reactions 😔

Megan

They do have a lot of those melodic songs hidden in their discography. Empty box is just one of many. If I can suggest, you have to listen to BE WITH YOU. That will forever be my favorite ATEEZ ballad. And MIST too! Nevetheless, I can say that Their fans, ATINYS, know how amazing they are vocally. And I understand where you are coming from in terms of song types. However, in concerts, you’ll really see the impact and uniqueness of those “busy songs”. And I think that’s how ATEEZ got famous, their songs are really super unique that no other group can pull it off. If it’s an ATEEZ song, it’s only them who can do it beautifully. And some of their title tracks have a buffer period…you will like it the more you listen to it. It’s infectious after a few more listens. I was never a fan of chaotic title tracks but guerrilla magnetized me in one way or another. Haha. Thanks for the reaction!!! ❤️ And I super appreciate that you keep on reiterating how talented these boys are. Next request: Please do Infinite Killing Voice reaction too! 🙏

Red 18

I completely agree with your opinion that there’s a lot of untapped potential in this group especially with Seonghwa (long hair) and Yunho (tall with the leather pants). I do disagree about their discography, but I might be a little biased. I think the heavy handed production comes from the complicated demand of trying to fit vocals and rap verses in a track while still making it danceable. They’re also a product of their generation, where boy groups are finding more success with that sound. Ateez actually used to feature way more vocals in their Treasure and Fever series, but got infinitely less attention for those tracks than newer, more chaotic tracks. Guerilla is their track with the most music show wins, Bouncy was HUGE for them and got them that Coachella invite, and Crazy Form was their fastest MV to hit 100M, has the record for most views in 24hrs from a boy group in their generation, and got them their BB200 #1. Work was doing numbers on TikTok before its release and Travis Kelce just used it in his TikTok, so I can’t say that that sound is holding them back success-wise and I see why they keep doing it. I also think that those songs are more in keeping with their own concept and catchy as hell. Great for titles and promos like that, but you can trust Ateez to sing on a B-side like Empty Box.

ripperella

Hi Justin! I came running over her because I was so bummed that someone had sent you WORK as one of your first MVS for ATEEZ. For me, i find ATEEZ to be in the same area of music as STRAY kids. Meaning that they have INTENSE dance music with alot of things going on instrumentally and visually. They do have lore and a running story line as well. I believe they write alot of their stuff as well as produce. But I actually LIKE the busy sound of STRY KIDS and ATEEZ. For me, I have to be in a very specific mood to want slow and more simple orchestration. WIth Ateez, you get amazing dancing, full songs, an amazing storyline and incredible vocals. they are just all around ENTERTAINERS!! I guess it's just that beautiful slow songs are not what their focus is. They even studied dance in the States because their music lends itself to intense dance. I appreciate. YOUR appreciation, lol, of their vocals. Sometimes we have to see the purpose of the group to understand why they do what they do. Thank you though for not just liking them to get views. also, could you watch RED VELVET and BIG MAMA killing voice?!!!!

Alicia Silvester

I think you must explore more song to them because you can see they have so many type of song you can they are very versatile the vocal and the rap too they know how to use they voice in the good time i think if you listen full song you will more appreciate the work of the producer team they are very talented. Thank you for your reaction☺️ and for your honest opinion🥰

Raissa Dia

So the entire team’s concept started out as them being pirates.. hongjoong (guy in the middle) is their “captain” and actually wrote all their title songs I think. I would say they are a very performance/dance heavy group. If you check out any of their stages, it’s like intense concept/theme or choreography, which makes their songs a lot more impactful when combined with their choreography. The songs that you disliked were actually mostly their title songs 😂

Carey Chen

I think some artist/companies ask them to add something to the vocals. It all depends on who asks. I don't think Infinite killing voice has much of that but I might be wrong. I agree with your takes. The songs are just not it. Their earlier songs showed of their talent much better, but they got a lot of attention with one style and now they only do that one style 😢. I miss treasure era. Their earlier albums all have the name Treasuee ep 1, ep 2 etc. Anyway, I'm still waiting for a title. song from them that I will like again. Love them so much. Thank you for reacting honestly 😌

Cookie

These shows always add some sort of autotune on the vocals. It is normally not up to the idols tho. The shows just do it to everyone even if their vocals are fine without it.
