My go-to as a kid was to deliberately mis-sing “There Is A Bomb In Gilead” and giggle to myself about it, I can’t be the only one

Got to admit, the hymn selection is pretty far out of my experience. But my upbringing was mostly Presbyterian (by definition non-evangelical) with a dash of Lutheran (who had some interesting camp songs). Didn't much run up against what my Grandpa (a preacher's kid) would call "The church of what's happening now". That said, I've always kinda liked "Lord of the Dance" and this place doesn't even have a praise band.. Mainstream Presbyterian hymns are pretty traditional, and not as inclined to breast-beating. The closest bit of "we are worthless" I remember is the line in the Messiah About "We like sheep". The Choir felt this could be misinterpreted in a very funny way especially as sung (and this is a chorus full of Grandmas and Granddads).

oh, heh, right, this strip exists as-it-is because i started a scene with walky with lucy and becky at church, picked whatever old worship song was stuck in my head that day, realized the lyrics were nuts, and also suddenly walky realized the lyrics were nuts, and then i wrote the next three panels i forget what the strip was originally going to be

Potato, potato.

Actually, lot of christian songs sound the same. So, I've seen this lyrics in almost 10 songs.

Story time: So dude, I used to live with a family that went to a church like this, my roommate and I lived in a two bedroom and his family lived next door. One day they asked me to go to church with them and I agreed even though I'm not into it. We get there and they are assuring me that "this is a fun church" and things like that, as things are getting set up I see people with tattoos bringing out guitars and a drum set in it's own little soundproof room and I'm like "ok, at least it's not boring 'thou art sin' type sermons. Then the song begins... and I'm listening to the lyrics and they are singing about how they want god to "rain holy fire down upon us" and I'm like "oh no... this is one of those death cults or something". Hard nope after that on going. ~<3

Except of course all mine are about things the Protestants cringe over (I remember “Mary Queen of Lasalette” particularly clearly because I was being taught by Lasalette nuns at the time)

Prediction. Walky is gonna be like "im not sure I like the whole 'my power is in the lord, i get my power from the lord' it makes me feel helpless, why can't I have power in myself and be a full autonomous person" and then Lucy is gunna be like "and what power do you hold to call out your mom in defense of your girlfriend?" And she is gunna be SOOOO right

I left the Catholic Church 35 years ago and I still can sing from memory multiple songs drilled into me in choir and church.

This is giving me flashbacks to when I was 7 or 8 and my primary school hired a bunch of evangelicals as our religion teachers. There’s this very clear moment I can remember when they had the class singing about how we’re counting down to Jesus returning and I was thinking “but we can’t know if that’s about to happen” because I was being raised Catholic and the song was completely the opposite of what I’d already learned.

While I am in Walky's camp as a nonreligious person, at the same time I wouldn't blame either one of them for breaking up over it. Religious incompatibility (like sexual, financial, political, etc., incompatibility) is a valid reason for breaking up. Neither person has to be "wrong" (as long as they aren't harmful to other people type of beliefs), it's ok just to say that is a gulf too wide, and neither would be comfortable compromising their beliefs.

They’re not in a cult, Walky, they’re just American Protestants

Just compromise and become Episcopalians
