BBCC's comment has already done some of the heavy lifting for me here. It's damn frustrating sometimes, watching good people tie their own hands and effectively surrender power to those WITHOUT any scruples. It's not too far off from those people who refused to vote in the last US presidential election because "Anyone who wants that much power must be a psychopath, so I don't see any difference between the candidates" or "The system is corrupt and I won't participate in corruption." And I'm like, A+ MORALITY THERE, GUYS, SO GLAD YOU STUCK TO YOUR GODDAMN PRINCIPLES. David and I have both written stories where pure souls like Dorothy end up in a "decide who lives and who dies" position and don't come out of it unscathed...that was It's Walky, that was Fans. But the versions of those stories where they DON'T take on that responsibility are worlds where good people suffer more. But thankfully, the comics of David Willis are less about simple, pat answers to thorny questions and more about people going through stages of development. There's not much in the way of "Here's the author telling you what to think" speechifying, with the exception of Leslie's earliest lecture: "Life is a never-ending learning process." Dorothy's not yet reached her final form, probably. In her case, I think she needs to learn to distinguish between what good there is to be done and what good she, personally, is suited to do. If she really can't allow herself to benefit from the events of last semester, then she probably isn't suited for politics. much as I might wish that someone like her would be. Some of my friends thrive on the fight, and they're more suited to being protestors like Jocelyn. I did the protest circuit for a little while, but I'm a pollworker now; I tend to be better at projecting calm and reassurance in troubled times, more like Hank. Sarah may make fun of Dorothy's "spreadsheet mind," but there's a lot of situations where a spreadsheet mind can be useful. Probably not the ones she imagined when she was five, though. Nobody's THAT gifted.
