One of his more sentimental works, this is a side of Liszt people often forget about amongst the craze over virtuosity - yet a side which is much more mature and marks the way to the genius of his later works. Published the year after Chopin's death, it is hard not to interpret the Consolations of S.172 as a tribute to his close friend, especially noting the similarities with Chopin's Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2.
