Full Of It #314 - Pokémon

How on EARTH this daft little trading card game became such a behemoth international success is beyond me. A contraction of 'Pocket Monsters', Pokémon is now considered to be the world's highest-grossing media franchise. Wikipedia claims that it's target audience is children aged between 5 and 12, but given it's billion dollar net worth and continued value to adults almost 30 years on, we all know that's not entirely true.

Am I fan? Not really, but I've got some cracking memories of dirty trading on the playground.

Hey Lymp hope you had a great birthday despite having a broken toe. I’m off a similar age to you and I remember the Pokémon craze all too well. I would collect and trade cards. I used to watch the tv series. I had an electronic Pokédex and a Pikachu special edition gameboy colour so I think it’s safe to say I was really enamoured with Pokémon. I did play some of Pokémon Go but after a while I lost interest probably because I could never catch anything good 😅 The last couple of years I have played the games that have been released on the switch, I’m always a sucker for the fairy type pokemon. Id have to say my favourite Pokemon is Eevee which I like to evolve to Sylveon.

Hiya Trainer Lymp, clarkedzoidberg is ready to comment! I was a bit surprised you didn’t mention the TV show, especially with what a queer icon Jesse and James are! It was bittersweet seeing the final episode of them as they were the only characters besides Ash and Pikachu (the little b) to appear in every season. Also, is there any Pokémon you wish had another evolution or baby form? Mine would be Mawile or Sableye as I didn’t like the Mega gimmick.

Hey Lymp Hope you had a great birthday and you're tootsie is feeling better. I'm a 1990 baby too so we are the same age, how sweet 🤗 I was never into pokemon growing up, however, at the ripe old age of 28, i picked up my step sons nintendo switch and began playing pokemon sword... and I was HOOKED!!! Pokemon obsessed from then on to say the least.... I have now completed most games ( legend of Arceus being my favorite) I have pokemon tat scattered all around my house, 10 plushies sitting on my bed and finally to top off my obsession, I now have Eevee tattooed on my wrist... Its never to late to join the pokemon party Great pod.. lots of love xx

where do I even begin with pokaymon..... I'm not gonna Raichu a love song about the trading cards or Pokémon Go, but instead I was pulled in by the video games and to a lesser extent the anime. LOVE Jessie and James and Meowth. my first introduction to Pokémon was around 1st grade in like 2002. my parents both worked full-time back then, so I was in a before-after school program, and I saw people playing a Pokémon GameBoy game. however, this was not Pokémon Blue or Red, it was the literal Pokémon Trading Card video game for the original GameBoy which came in a black cartridge. it was like Pokémonception. it looked interesting, but I always had an aversion to anything popular, so I just sort of ignored it and played Wario Land 4 instead. when I visited my cousins, sometimes they would have the Pokémon anime on, but still I didn't think much of the whole thing. then came 2005. this time I was in a summer camp program that was held at a local daycare, and I made friends with this boy who gave me Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Crystal. I played Pokémon Crystal first, and finally started to understand why everyone loved this stuff. I had a Chikorita and she was a bad bitch, and I made it all the way to Violet City, which at the time I thought was called "Violent" City and that the game would introduce like graffiti and gangs or something that you would have to fist-fight. it turned out that both games were stolen from this other boy I was friends with, so I returned them to the other boy. but to this day Pokémon Crystal is SUCH a good game. when I played Pokémon Blue, it was really clunky in comparison. from there, I moved on to the other games. my mom took me to Toys 'R' Us and I got Pokémon LeafGreen and Pokémon Emerald, mostly because my favorite color is green. this was sort of the beginning of the end for my initial Pokémon interest, as to me nothing could top Pokémon Emerald. the Hoenn region was so beautiful on the tiny ass GameBoy Advance screen, and I especially loved doing the Pokémon Contests. I never could get into the later games, although I do own a few of them. I did get into the anime a little, but when I found out about the 1997 Pokémon Shock incident, it freaked me out a little bit. Justice for Porygon. P.S. I had a dream that I met Joanna Lumley and I told her to watch Novympia.

I had to give myself a couple of hours to think about what my favorite Pokemon was and I think my conclusion is Bulbasaur because being queer I can relate to there story of feeling alone and lost and feeling different for being queer!! Also I love you both so much I just joined today and I have been binge listening to all of the podcast episodes💜💜

I don’t play or know anything about Pokémon but I enjoyed this anyway. Thanks puffin. Xoxo Zach

Embarrassed to say that as a stupid pre-teen, I was once in possession of THREE Charizard cards, one of which was a SHINY, all at the same time. I traded them all away like a fucking prick. It haunts me still over 20 years later (not dramatic at all) My best friend had a very rare MewTwo which he loaned to a girl we were mildly friendly with for the weekend. I’m not sure how she persuaded him but little did he know, she was moving to another county the next week & off she fucked with his best card. We never saw her again. He’s still fairly salty about it 😂

hello mom, happy birthmas 🫶🏼 i don't comment often because i don't have much to add but pokemon is one of my very niche interests that i know too much about-for reference i was born in 1998 so perhaps that's why i could probably name at least 70-80% of all 1025 pokemon🤡 but i really do just enjoy little creachers, and they're no exception. there's certainly been flop eras and moments in the game franchise (not so sure about the cards) but i've stuck with it, just something to do i guess (that brings joy, usually) in regards to the collecting mindset, as someone who's learned hoarding from my mother, it's easy to get the bug when it's something that brings a lot of joy, but i've never tried to collect every single one of something, just the ones that i like the most. i collect sitting cuties for example, the plush line by pokemon that is just every single pokemon, around 4-9 inches tall depending on which it is. but i only collect the ones i like-i've made a notes app of every pokemon from a generation id want to buy. is the total in the hundreds? perhaps. have i already sunk several hundred into the shelf i have? maybe. am i out of space? not unless i sell the lego i was collecting when i worked for them 🤡 sorry for the long comment! just passionate about this topic and could continue, but perhaps we could have nover on for a pokemon part two? also i hope your toe heals quickly!!! much love mother dearest 💜

Happy birthday Lymp! Pissing myself at the story about you pickling the Davids Pokémon card. Also as a Scottish person you saying I traded the manky card has a whole other meaning 😂. Speaking of the Von Erichs did you ever watch The Iron Claw, I went to the cinema myself to see it and there was me (a 30 year old woman) along with about 5 men also mostly on their own sitting crying at the end. Absolutely loved the movie though what a tragic story...could make a good ep!

Happy birthday Lymp! 💖

Hiii not Pokémon related but this podcast is basically the soundtrack to my life. I listen to it every time I’m in the gym and I’ve been going through old podcasts/ my fav ones that I haven’t listened to in a while. I recently started the quarantine ones and nearly injured myself when I was lifting weights and heard you and nova tell the human faeces story about your neighbour finding shit on the street and you two talking about how it was probably Charmaine. Instantly started pissing myself

Hi there, Long-time listener, first-time commenter. Apologies for the long comment, but as the late, great Robin Williams once said: "Effie, brace yourself." I’ve been part of the Novympia cult lifestyle since February this year, and I’ve loved every minute of it. I absolutely adore Ina Garten, and since I work from home, I often have her playing in the background while I work. It’s either her, Nigella, or one of your extended vlogs—it’s like having a bit of friendly company throughout the day. So when youtube randomly suggested your parodies, well i have been hooked ever since. I also listen to your podcasts during my daily dog walks, and I’m nearly caught up with them all! My partner Ryan and I are foster parents, and this past year has been a tough one for us. Honestly, your podcasts, streams, and videos have been a balm. You’ve brought so much laughter into our lives, and you never fail to put a smile on my face. Ryan and I don’t like the same TV or Movies - except for horror, which we watch at least once a week—but now we share a love for you both. Our Sunday night ritual involves putting the kids to bed, pouring a nice glass of something (minimum 13%!), sitting down for dinner, and watching your latest video together. Theres rarely a day that either one of us don’t use a Novympia reference. I wanted to comment today because I was born in 1988 and, like you, experienced the Pokémon craze firsthand. Back then, I was completely obsessed—I traded cards, watched the shows, and dove headfirst into the hype. Now, we have an eight-year-old who is equally obsessed with Pokémon cards. It’s funny, though—unlike me, he has absolutely no interest in the movies, TV shows, or games. For him, it’s all about the joy of collecting and trading cards with his friends. It’s fascinating to see how Pokémon never truly goes out of fashion but keeps coming back around for each new generation. On a similar note, last year, there was about a month when every kid was suddenly obsessed with yo-yos—until they got banned at school, of course! Finally, I wanted to chime in on a topic you’ve mentioned a few times: whether kids today enjoy older movies like the Wizard of oz. I can’t speak for all kids, but my eight-year-old will watch an older movie—just not willingly! If I put one on, I’ll often catch him setting down his tablet or Switch and watching without even realising it. For example, the other day, I was working and had the original 1947 Miracle on 34th Street playing in the background. He came in to ask me something, sat down, and ended up watching the entire movie with me. That said, if I had suggested we sit down and watch it together, he would’ve laughed and said no! Anyway, that’s me—just popping in to say hi and to thank you for all the laughs. Your content has truly brightened some tough times for us. I know, Gay!!!!!!!!!!

Matthew Lock

Hope your toe is blessed by the Voltarol gods. I wasn’t a huge Pokémon fan, but I used to love just how absurdly camp Team Rocket were as a young closeted gay kid growing up in the 90s/2000s. Love you all.

*insert gif of Nene Leeks saying Pokémon here* Just finished listening. Great pod as always. Never got any of the cards or played it growing up. I was never allowed to get them as a kid. I’ve only had one Pokémon card in my life, a WEEDLE! Only because my dad found it on the ground and attached it to my bike to make the noise as the card slapped over the spokes. I saw the movie only once at a friends house. I never got into the Pokémon Go craze. I think since it was never part of my childhood I feel so apathetic to it despite it being so formative to many my age.

I’m a couple of years older than you so missed the trading card game at school. However in my early/mid 20’s I was managing a gamestation store (for those who don’t know it was like the cooler, dirtier version of Game shops) and I got into Pokemon more then, with quite a few of my staff members really being into it. They used to call me jigglypuff- not because I was fat and farted, but because I was always singing. Later I REALLY got into Pokemon go. My ex husband loved it and so did my boss. Never really played it out with the ex… he’d leave me at home with the baby and go out and play all night with a bunch of other ‘serious’ players. But my boss and I (I was assistant manager) used to leave the staff in the shop and just fuck off for a couple of hours down the seafront to catch Pokemon. Good times. And I used to really annoy the ex husband when I’d go home from work and show him I’d found better Pokemon than him. Funnily enough my late honeymoon with the ex husband was to Barcelona and I was amazed he even wanted to go… turns out he’d booked the long weekend on a special event where Barcelona had exclusive Pokemon and special Pokemon related things going on. I should have known!

Midnight listener to your dulcet tones here. I am a Pokemon fan for the nostalgia of it all, but not an avid enthusiast anymore. As a gay man of a similar age, I enjoy as a date conversation starter; who was their go-to Pokémon starter, favorite Pokémon in general, or favorite Eeveelution, etc. I have always found it a great way during that awkward first date to open up the conversation. I am curious, although briefly mentioned towards the end of the pod, was Pokémon ever a conversation starter when you and Nova first started dating? All the best, A fan of the pod

Christopher

🎤’take my pain away..’ 😂 Another great pod, even if I don’t know much about the topic I’m always entertained. I usually go for a Sunday morning/afternoon walk to listen to this pod and burst out laughing to myself several times, I must look crazy to passers by 😆

Matthew

I played the pokemon games on and off over the years. I was in year 7 at secondry school when pokemon cards came out. It did not take long for them to be banned at my school due to people stealing other peoples cards. Absolute shit heads at my school. I actually restarted collecting Pokemon cards the other week as they were a prize in one of the games at an arcade in Aberystwyth. The odds were highly in your favour and my partner and I took advantage. Sadly on the second to last day there, they must have caught on and the odds were worse. I think we both won about 11 booster packs each from that game over the course of 4 days. It was still over £100 put in that machine though. My friend ID for PTCGP is 4003-0349-1643-9645 if anyone else is playing it :)

Loved the pod and video this week! I agree that watchmojo is trash (them and whatculture), uploading videos daily is not conducive of quality content. Can I be a curmudgeonly millennial for a second, and say that there are too many pokemon these days! There's over 1000! Some of the designs are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel

Olympia I'm so disappointed with you. When you said you're listening on the 16th going into the 17th I was expecting your dulcet tones for a rendition of "16 Going On 17" from The Sound of Music.
